Personal terms nearing conclusion: Liverpool engages in discussions to secure their ideal replacement for Salah, who is considered a “Mane regen”

When Jurgen Klopp revealed his intention to depart from Liverpool, it was met with widespread sorrow. How could they possibly find a successor for the German?

Now, a similar sentiment surrounds Mohamed Salah, who announced on Tuesday night that he would be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.

Salah nearly left Merseyside last summer but ultimately agreed to a contract worth £400k-per-week to continue wearing the red jersey.

However, that time is now approaching its end. He ranks as the fourth top-scorer in Premier League history, and finding a replacement for a player of his caliber will be a daunting task. Nevertheless, Fenway Sports Group will make every effort.

How Liverpool might find a successor for Mo Salah

FSG made significant investments during the last summer transfer window, notably bringing in Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Alexander Isak to Anfield for substantial fees.

While those signings haven’t fully panned out, they will need to open their wallets once more to attract an exciting replacement for Salah to the Premier League.

Numerous names will likely be suggested between now and the arrival of the eventual successor, but initial indications suggest that Liverpool’s top target is Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise.

However, he is currently enjoying a stellar season in Germany, making it seem improbable that he would return to English football in the near future. He only transferred to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2024 from Crystal Palace.

In relation to the German league, Liverpool may explore other options in that country if reports are accurate, with attention turning towards Yan Diomande.

Football FanCast reported exclusively in February that they had been in consistent discussions with the player’s representatives and were ‘close’ to finalizing personal terms. A source indicated that they “believe this is the future best winger in the world and are prepared to approach their transfer record again to make it happen this summer.”

Recent reports from Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail support these assertions. Steele states that Liverpool has ‘reached out to agents’ as they evaluate several potential replacements for Salah, including Diomande from RB Leipzig and Bradley Barcola from PSG. The former is reportedly a ‘long-term’ target for the club.

Although this transfer may not be inexpensive, it could be more feasible since the player himself acknowledged last year that he is a “big Liverpool fan,” expressing that “I want to play for Liverpool.”

Reasons why Diomande would be an outstanding replacement for Salah

It is fair to assert that Diomande is among the most thrilling young forwards in European football at present.

At just 19 years old, this season has marked a significant breakthrough for the Ivorian, who has scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 29 appearances across all competitions.

Recognized as a “generational talent” by Reds journalist Bence Bocsak and referred to as a “Sadio Mane” replacement by the Liverpool podcast Top of the Kop, Diomande’s appeal extends beyond his goal and assist statistics.

In fact, this season, no player in the Bundesliga has achieved more successful dribbles than Diomande. The young forward leads the pack with an impressive 4.2 successful dribbles per 90 minutes. For context, the next closest player is his Leipzig teammate Antonio Nusa, who has a rate of 3.3 per 90.

This immediately illustrates not only why the teenager has drawn comparisons to Mane but also why he would serve as an excellent substitute for the departing Salah.

While he still has a distance to cover to match the impressive statistics accumulated by the great Egyptian over the years, there is a strong belief that Diomande is well on his path to achieving greatness.

Similar to Salah, he possesses the talent to generate opportunities from seemingly impossible situations. According to DataMB, he ranks in the top 3% of wingers in Europe’s top five leagues this season for progressive carries, also placing in the top 8% for successful dribbles and the top 6% for key passes (chance creation).

This is a mesmerizing talent.

This is an intriguing talent, a player who impacts matches not just with his goal-scoring but also through his dribbling, creativity, and capacity to generate opportunities for his teammates.

Salah has historically excelled in this regard, and if Diomande can match even a small portion of the Liverpool number 11’s abilities, he will undoubtedly be an excellent acquisition.
