Newcastle United player sidelined for four months due to new injury setback – surgery needed

Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar will be unavailable for four months following a recent injury setback.

Fabian Schar has encountered a significant injury setback for Newcastle United just weeks ahead of his anticipated return date.

Schar sustained an ankle injury in January that necessitated surgery, with a recovery period of three months.

The match against Crystal Palace on Sunday was aimed as a possible return date for the Swiss centre-back. However, he has now been ruled out for an additional month.

Lewis Miley and Sven Botman are expected to return to contention after recovering from their respective thigh and facial injuries, while Bruno Guimaraes is nearing the end of his recovery from a two-month hamstring injury.

However, there was ‘bad news’ concerning Schar, who has undergone another operation.

“Fabian, unfortunately, developed an infection in his foot,” Howe stated. “He has been hospitalized for a minor operation to clean that out. Therefore, we estimate he won’t return for about a month.

“So, that’s unfortunate news for him.”

Howe elaborated: “We’ve had somewhat mixed injury updates during the break.

“Bruno, as most are aware, suffered from mumps upon his return from Brazil. This has delayed his comeback. He will not participate in this game, and there’s a possibility he may also miss the Bournemouth match.

“There are no injury issues, but the illness has prevented him from completing some crucial work that we needed him to do to be considered for these matches. He may be available for the following game. It’s essential that he returns when he is fully ready.

“Regarding everyone else, we’re in a good position. Lewis has trained well with us, which has been a positive development, as we have greatly missed him.

“Additionally, Sandro [Tonali] played during the international break despite his injury from the Sunderland match. All others are in good condition.
