Newcastle United star is facing a suspension following an incident with Sunderland, as the Premier League is prepared to take action.

Joelinton of Newcastle United is at risk of a two-match ban.

When Newcastle United resumes Premier League play on Sunday with a match against Crystal Palace, they could see the return of several players.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies will have had a three-week hiatus between matches. This international break likely came at an opportune moment for United, allowing them to regroup after disappointing losses to Barcelona in the Champions League and Sunderland in a troubling Tyne-Wear derby.

That defeat has left Newcastle struggling in 12th place in the Premier League standings with seven matches remaining, putting them in a challenging position to secure European qualification for the next season.

However, the break has provided an opportunity for several players to recuperate after a demanding schedule, enabling key players Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, and Fabian Schar to regain their fitness following injuries.

Guimaraes and Miley will enhance the depth of Newcastle’s midfield, which was overwhelmed and ineffective during the derby. Sandro Tonali also missed that match due to a hip injury but has since participated in two World Cup playoff matches for Italy.

If all three players successfully complete training this week, it will provide additional options for Howe, alongside Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey, and Joe Willock.

Joelinton was seen on vacation during the international break, having not been chosen for the Brazilian national team. The strong midfielder has been dealing with a toe injury and will have benefited from the time off.

Howe now has to decide whether to include the 30-year-old in the lineup against Palace, particularly since Joelinton is on the verge of a two-match suspension.

In the derby match at St James’ Park, Newcastle received only one yellow card, which was issued to Joelinton. He was cautioned following a confrontation with Sunderland players after Brian Brobbey scored a last-minute winner, as Newcastle aimed to resume play swiftly. Brobbey also received a yellow card for taking off his shirt amid rising tensions.

This booking marked Joelinton’s ninth of the Premier League season. If he receives another yellow card, he will face a two-match suspension for exceeding the limit. Players who accumulate 10 bookings by the 32nd match of the season are subject to a two-game ban.

Newcastle’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Sunday will be their 32nd league game of the season, which means the Brazilian must avoid a yellow card in that match to reset the threshold to 15 bookings.

Howe will be mindful of this situation, and while he may wish to revert to his preferred midfield trio of Tonali, Guimaraes, and Joelinton for the game at Selhurst Park, he will also need to consider the potential suspension risk.
