Newcastle finalizes agreement for a new signing despite discussions with Chelsea, with Ross Wilson playing a crucial role.

Newcastle United has reportedly secured a deal to sign a player who had conversations about joining Chelsea, thanks to the efforts of sporting director Ross Wilson.

Eddie Howe faces his toughest week at Newcastle as pressure mounts.

It has arguably been the most challenging week of Eddie Howe’s tenure at Newcastle.

In just four days, the Magpies were eliminated from the Champions League under the most disappointing circumstances and then suffered a defeat against their fiercest rivals in an excruciating manner.

The 7-2 defeat at Camp Nou last Wednesday still resonates.

Newcastle had shown genuine competitiveness for much of the first half — Anthony Elanga equalized twice for the visitors during a thrilling opening period — only for a contentious penalty awarded to Lamine Yamal just before halftime, following a VAR review that Howe openly criticized, to tilt the match irreversibly in favor of Barcelona.

The second half proved to be a harsh reality check, with Sandro Tonali leaving the field due to a groin injury, compounding the team’s woes.

An 8-3 aggregate defeat marked the end of Newcastle’s Champions League journey.

There was no opportunity to reflect on it.

Just four days later, the Tyne-Wear derby took place — the first at St James’ Park in over ten years — and hopes were high for a sweet revenge.

Anthony Gordon provided the ideal start, scoring in the tenth minute to bring his Premier League total to 10 goals since the beginning of the year.

Newcastle held the lead at halftime. Then the second half unfolded.

Chemsdine Talbi equalized for Sunderland, a header from Malick Thiaw was ruled out, and in the dying moments, Brian Brobbey scored a 90th-minute winner, sending the Sunderland supporters into a frenzy and leaving the home crowd in shocked silence.

Sunderland achieved a league double, and Howe became the first Newcastle manager ever to lose both of his initial league derbies against the Black Cats.

The outcome has seen Newcastle drop to 12th place in the Premier League, overtaken by Sunderland, with the prospect of European qualification now appearing increasingly remote.

Eight losses in their last 11 league matches is a dismal statistic for a club that started the season with aspirations of competing on four fronts.

However, amidst the devastation of a truly dreadful week, Wilson and the recruitment team at St James’ Park have provided some rare positive news — which clearly points towards the future.

Newcastle has reached an agreement to sign Johan Martinez after edging out Chelsea.

TEAMtalk and journalist Graeme Bailey report that Newcastle has triumphed in the race to acquire 16-year-old Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez from Independiente del Valle, the same club that produced twins Edwin and Holger Quintero, who were recently signed by Arsenal.

The young player has been recognized as one of the most exciting prospects emerging from South America, boasting incredible speed, innate flair, and the ability to play across the attacking front.

Reports suggest that Newcastle has finalized an agreement for Martinez, with Wilson playing a particularly ‘key role’.

The competition for his signature was intense.

Arsenal was in the mix, leveraging their connection with Independiente del Valle, while Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership also engaged in discussions regarding a potential deal for Martinez.

Man City, through the City Football Group, Liverpool, Brighton, and Bundesliga clubs RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen were also interested, meaning that nearly every major club with a serious youth recruitment network was aware of this talent.

Nevertheless, Newcastle emerged victorious.

TT indicates that the club’s vision, the clear pathway available, and the development program Wilson has established were crucial in persuading Martinez and his representatives that St James’ Park was the ideal destination.

He will officially join in 2028 when he turns 18, and the deal is viewed internally as a significant long-term declaration of intent.

In a week filled with nothing but challenges on the field, this recruitment serves as a reminder to everyone at Newcastle of the larger vision being pursued.

Additionally, other sources indicate that Newcastle has initiated preliminary discussions regarding a potential agreement for Marcus Thuram.
