New video footage released online may alter the narrative surrounding Van Dijk’s penalty against Brentford.

A Reddit user has shared fresh footage that has reignited discussions about one of the key moments from Liverpool’s 3–2 loss to Brentford. The new angle seems to suggest that the contact involving Virgil van Dijk occurred just outside the penalty area.

Alternative angle of Van Dijk raises questions about VAR’s decision against Liverpool.

The clip, uploaded by user NEEZ8, appears to show the Dutch defender’s challenge on Dango Ouattara from a broader viewpoint, indicating that any contact was made just outside the box.

This is crucial because referee Tim Robinson initially signaled for a free-kick before VAR intervened to change it to a penalty – a decision that allowed Igor Thiago to score what ultimately became the winning goal for the home team.

Liverpool’s performance in west London was subpar, but it’s difficult to overlook how pivotal this moment turned out to be.

Had the foul occurred outside the area, the match could have ended in a 2–2 draw, providing us with a genuine opportunity to regain some momentum.

Mark Clattenburg stated that “Van Dijk clearly made contact with Dango Ouattara’s foot on the line of the penalty area,” emphasizing that the line “is part of the penalty area.”

However, this new footage will leave fans questioning whether VAR’s assessment was incorrect from the start.

Liverpool’s narrow margins and VAR controversies continue to escalate.

Arne Slot has now witnessed his team lose four consecutive Premier League matches, marking our worst streak since 2021. While the performance against Brentford fell short of expectations, these marginal decisions consistently go against us.

This was not the only contentious call in this match, as Cody Gakpo’s penalty incident also proved to be a divisive decision that shifted the momentum of the game.

We have conceded two or more goals in nine of our last ten league matches, and until we rectify our issues, it will be challenging to halt our losing streak.

Nevertheless, when even online videos begin to depict a narrative that contradicts VAR’s ruling, it’s hard not to feel frustrated.
