Mikel Arteta offers injury update on Timber, Odegaard, and others ahead of Southampton match
Mikel Arteta has shared the latest information regarding the fitness of Jurrien Timber and Ben White as Arsenal prepares for their Premier League match against Southampton this weekend.
The Gunners’ manager addressed the condition of Timber, who sustained an injury during the first half of Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over PSG.
“He was exceptional in the first half, but he experienced some muscular discomfort and was uncertain about his condition,” Arteta commented on the defender’s situation post-match.
“I didn’t want to take any chances. He has been out for a year and has accumulated more playing time than we would have preferred in recent weeks, so we need to manage his workload carefully.”
Timber has also been omitted from the Dutch national team for the upcoming international break, raising concerns about his availability for Saturday’s encounter with Southampton.
Arsenal could face a significant challenge at right back if Timber is unable to play. Riccardo Calafiori had to step in during the second half against PSG, despite being primarily a left-back.
Additionally, the Gunners are monitoring the fitness of Ben White, who has not participated in training this week as he recovers from a groin injury. During Friday’s pre-match press conference, Arteta provided updates on both players.
“We had to adjust training for several players,” the Spaniard noted. “The same adjustments were made today due to their workload.
A decision will be made this afternoon regarding their involvement. They are close to returning, which is encouraging news.”
Takehiro Tomiyasu has resumed training. The Japan international has yet to make an appearance this season, and Arsenal is cautious about his return, although Arteta mentioned that he is nearing a comeback.
In other news, Oleksandr Zinchenko will not be available, but Arteta expressed optimism regarding his potential return.
“Alex is likely to be back after the international break if everything goes well,” the manager stated. “He’s making excellent progress.”
On the other hand, Martin Odegaard is expected to be sidelined for a longer period. “Martin’s situation is quite challenging,” Arteta noted.
“I anticipated he would still be in a boot and dealing with various issues, but he’s working diligently, feeling good, and pushing himself. It’s tough to provide a specific timeline.”
