Mikel Arteta might consider dropping an underperforming player following his observed decisions during the match against Chelsea…
Mikel Arteta’s recent decisions during the Chelsea match suggest he may be inclined to eliminate a faltering star from the team.
Mikel Arteta may consider parting ways with a struggling player following his visible frustration during the match against Chelsea.
The Arsenal manager’s disbelief was evident as he fell to the ground in the closing moments of the London derby on Sunday, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Gunners came close to securing a win at Stamford Bridge on two occasions. However, Arteta’s disappointment peaked when Leandro Trossard failed to capitalize on a crucial opportunity late in the game.
After starting on the bench to accommodate the returning captain Martin Odegaard, Trossard was called upon in the 71st minute to replace Gabriel Martinelli, just after the team had conceded an equalizer from Pedro Neto’s long-range effort.
Trossard’s first chance came with only three minutes remaining. Following a flick from Mikel Merino that was saved by Robert Sanchez, the ball fell to Trossard, who only needed to keep his shot on target to secure the win.
Instead, he sent it soaring over the bar, eliciting a collective sigh from the traveling supporters. Little did they know, a more significant miss was yet to unfold.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, William Saliba found himself unmarked on the left and delivered a dangerous low cross.
Trossard, arriving ahead of Kai Havertz, attempted to guide the ball into the far corner but failed to make solid contact, allowing it to roll wide.
Havertz expressed his frustration, shouting at Trossard for missing a straightforward tap-in.
Meanwhile, Arteta was left bewildered on the sidelines, grappling with how his team had squandered their chances to score.
It is possible that VAR would have disallowed the goal for offside had it been scored, as replays indicated that Saliba was nearly level with Levi Colwill. However, this will not provide any comfort for the north London club.
Arsenal had to settle for a draw, which likely felt like a loss after they relinquished their lead and failed to find the back of the net. This result marks their first four-game winless streak in 19 months, leaving them nine points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the table.
On the eve of the match in west London, Trossard expressed optimism about their attacking form but urged his teammates to be more decisive in front of goal.
“Last year, we faced a similar situation where doubts arose about our scoring ability, but after January, we had a stretch of five or six games where we scored five goals against our opponents,” he noted.
“Every season has its challenges, and it’s up to us to regain our momentum. The confidence within the team remains high. We have exceptional players, and we can turn things around swiftly.”
He further stated, “Overall, we are striving to win matches and score goals. It just needs to come together, and hopefully, that will happen on Sunday.”
Unfortunately for Arsenal on Sunday, that was not the case, and Trossard was left particularly disappointed.
Last season, he was viewed as a key asset for Arteta, but his recent performances suggest a different narrative this year.
He received a needless red card against Manchester City, made a poor back-pass that resulted in Saliba’s sending off against Bournemouth, and missed a penalty against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
Following his late miss against Chelsea, Arteta may consider utilizing other players, such as the 17-year-old prodigy Ethan Nwaneri. The team cannot afford more mistakes like this if they hope to keep pace with Liverpool and City in the title race.
