Mikel Arteta delivers massive Odegaard, William Saliba and Bukayo Saka injury update ahead of Arsenal UCL opener…
Mikel Arteta provides a significant update on the injuries of Odegaard, William Saliba, and Bukayo Saka ahead of Arsenal’s UCL opener.
Arteta shares news on Odegaard and Saliba following the match against Forest.
Arsenal secured a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium yesterday.
The Gunners encountered a potential challenge against the Tricky Trees during the early kick-off.
Arsenal controlled the game in the first half and eventually scored with a brilliant volley from Martin Zubimendi from outside the box.
Viktor Gyokeres quickly doubled the lead right after the break. Zubimendi further enhanced the performance with the Gunners’ third goal.
Despite the convincing win, the Gunners faced another injury concern as Martin Odegaard suffered a shoulder injury similar to the one he had against Leeds United.
When asked for an update post-match, Arteta mentioned that the Gunners’ captain was uncomfortable continuing and would be evaluated by the medical team.
The Spanish manager expressed optimism that Odegaard could be ready to face Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League opener at San Mames on Tuesday.
He told Arsenal.com: “Yes, very similar. I’m not sure if it’s exactly the same area, but it’s a very similar injury.
He wasn’t comfortable continuing; he has played two matches with Norway, and unfortunately, he couldn’t go on today.
“So we need to assess him with the doctors and see, but I’m confident he will do his utmost to be fit for Tuesday.”
When asked about William Saliba’s condition, the manager stated that the French defender completed the entire training session on Friday.
However, he opted to be cautious with the center-back and suggested that the 24-year-old might return against Athletic.
Arteta added: “He trained yesterday and completed the whole session, and he was fine. I spoke to him afterward, and he mentioned that he thinks he needs a few more days.
The recovery has been too quick given the severity of the injury, so when a player expresses that, it’s best not to rush it. I believe Mosquera performed exceptionally well.”
Arsenal played without Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Jesus in the match, and Odegaard was substituted early on. Declan Rice began the game on the bench.
Nevertheless, the Gunners achieved a convincing win at the Emirates. This highlights the quality and depth of the squad this season.
Cristhian Mosquera is already proving to be an outstanding signing. He has excelled in central defense and has effectively filled in for Saliba.
Arsenal showcased a revamped attack featuring Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, and Noni Madueke. They still managed to create numerous opportunities during the match.
As a result, injuries are no longer a significant concern for the Gunners. Arteta made the right decision by not hastily bringing Saliba back into play.
Saliba is expected to return for the Champions League opener against Athletic in the Basque Country.
Odegaard will undergo evaluation and may be included in the matchday squad for Tuesday’s game.
Saka is close to making his return. The England international might be back in time for the clash against Manchester City next weekend.
