Martinelli ban and fine verdicts as FA make punishment decision on Arsenal ace…
Martinelli’s ban and fine verdicts as FA reaches a decision on Arsenal player
There have been calls for Gabriel Martinelli to face retrospective action after the Arsenal player became the center of controversy in a match against Liverpool due to his reaction to Conor Bradley’s injury.
Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli has ignited significant outrage following his response to Conor Bradley’s injury during the late stages of his team’s draw with Liverpool midweek. The Gunners were eager to secure a victory to capitalize on Manchester City’s earlier draw, but they were ultimately frustrated by the visitors, who managed to keep Mikel Arteta’s squad at bay.
As both teams sought a winning goal, an unfortunate fall from Bradley left him on the ground near the touchline, leading Martinelli to push him off the field in an attempt to continue the match. However, considering the potential severity of the injury, this action incited considerable anger, resulting in a brawl between the two teams.
Pundits expressed their outrage, with Roy Keane branding Martinelli a ‘disgrace’, although both Arne Slot and Arteta attempted to calm the situation. The Brazilian has since expressed his apologies to Bradley for the incident, but this has not deterred calls for a possible fine or suspension.
Despite the backlash, Martinelli is not anticipated to face any additional punishment from the FA retrospectively, as match referee Anthony Taylor issued a yellow card during the game. Therefore, our writers have shared their perspectives on what should occur regarding the Arsenal player following the incident.
I believe Martinelli was undoubtedly in the wrong for his actions, and his regret is evident through his apology to Bradley. While I understand why some may call for retrospective measures, I agree with Slot’s post-match remarks that provide insight into Martinelli’s motivations.
Taylor effectively de-escalated the situation on the field, and in my opinion, there is no need to pursue the matter further.
Martinelli’s actions were clearly inappropriate, and there is no valid justification for pushing a player who was clearly in distress. Although I do not support his behavior, it is crucial to recognize that during the high-pressure environment of a Premier League match, players can become so engrossed in the game that they may overlook more significant issues.
This does not excuse his actions, but we have witnessed numerous instances where players go down to halt the game or gain a stoppage, so it would not be entirely unreasonable for Martinelli to have initially thought that Bradley was doing the same. Slot articulated this well in his post-match comments, indicating that Martinelli likely would not have reacted in that manner had he been aware of the severity of the injury.
Nevertheless, despite his apology, I still believe the Brazilian should receive a suspension. In my opinion, Anthony Taylor should have issued a red card at the moment, and a retrospective ban would appropriately reflect the seriousness of the incident without exaggerating it.
To me, an apology does not alter the situation. It is a straightforward decision. Martinelli may not have realized that Bradley was injured, but such behavior is unsportsmanlike. If he had acted that way towards a player with a broken leg, he would face consequences.
Regardless of the game’s context, such actions are unacceptable. While a severe punishment is not warranted, a fine or a minor reprimand should be the standard. As I mentioned, an apology does not make the behavior acceptable.

Martinelli’s swift apology alters my perspective. Given that he diverts his gaze to track the ball that Bradley sends out of play just as his ankle gives way, I am inclined to extend him the benefit of the doubt.
He is not the first athlete to act foolishly in a moment of intensity, nor will he be the last. With Martinelli having issued a public apology and a personal one to Bradley, no further action is warranted at this time.

Gabriel Martinelli ought to be more aware. Having experienced a significant knee injury in his own career, his treatment of Conor Bradley is even more reprehensible. While it is indeed a fierce competition in a Premier League title race, that does not excuse a lack of human decency. Bradley has sustained a serious knee injury that may sideline him for the entire season.
Even if one suspects he is exaggerating his injury, Martinelli’s response was completely inappropriate. There is no justification for his actions. He should face additional consequences from the FA, though whether that will happen remains uncertain.
The Brazilian has publicly expressed regret to the Liverpool player, and both Arne Slot and Mikel Arteta downplayed the incident following the match. Considering that Anthony Taylor witnessed Martinelli’s actions and issued him a booking, this typically suffices for the FA to refrain from further involvement.
The reaction from the Liverpool locker room, along with Bradley’s own response, will likely be crucial in determining whether this matter is quietly overlooked. Regardless, Martinelli is unlikely to be well-received the next time he faces the Reds at Anfield. Liverpool may choose to forgive, but they will certainly not forget.

Gabriel Martinelli may have offered an apology, but that does not imply the FA should remain inactive. Simply put, the Arsenal player deserves a suspension of at least one match for his actions against Liverpool’s Conor Bradley.
Everton defender Michael Keane was controversially dismissed on Wednesday night following a VAR review for pulling the hair of Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare during an aerial duel. If that constitutes a sending off, then there can be no justification or mitigation for Martinelli’s actions.
As Ian Doyle accurately pointed out in his analysis for the ECHO, there is a boundary, and Martinelli overstepped it. He was lucky to avoid a red card.
Matty Hewitt
I believe Arne Slot accurately captures the situation with his remarks after the match. What Martinelli did was disgraceful, but had he been aware of the severity of Bradley’s injury, he likely would have refrained from such behavior.
As the Liverpool manager notes, there is excessive time-wasting and simulation occurring, yet there should be a form of punishment similar to a red card. I think the officials made an incorrect decision on the field.
