The pressure surrounding Arne Slot’s Liverpool project is mounting, and focus has now shifted to one of the priciest signings in Premier League history.

With Liverpool’s title defense crumbling at a concerning rate, former Reds defender Stephen Warnock has openly urged Slot to take significant measures regarding Alexander Isak — even proposing that the manager should exclude him from the first-team squad entirely until he is fully prepared to contribute.

Isak’s high-profile summer transfer from Newcastle United — estimated at approximately £130 million, setting a new British transfer record — was anticipated to enhance Liverpool’s attacking capabilities.

However, his arrival has coincided with a remarkable decline in form. The forward’s pre-season was severely affected by a contract dispute at Newcastle, resulting in him lacking fitness and match sharpness when he finally completed his transfer late in the window.

Warnock contends that this lack of physical readiness has been evident since he joined Liverpool’s starting XI.

“He’s not prepared. Not physically. Not mentally for this moment,” Warnock stated in a discussion with WhichBookie. “He missed vital conditioning work over the summer.

The difference is clear — he’s not moving with power, not pressing with intensity, and not impacting matches. He needs to be removed from the firing line.”

The statistics back up this concern. Liverpool have now suffered six losses in their last seven league matches — four of those defeats occurring with Isak in the starting lineup.

The latest setback, a disheartening 3-0 loss at Anfield against Nottingham Forest, highlighted the issue: in 68 minutes on the field, Isak managed only 14 touches.

At a club that heavily depends on fluid, dynamic attacking movements, such a minimal impact has become impossible to overlook.

Warnock believes that continuing to select him merely postpones the adaptation process.

“He requires a brief pre-season away from the limelight,” he stated. “Allow him to properly rebuild his fitness: long-distance runs, sprint exercises, and strength training. He needs to accumulate miles in his legs. At this moment, he appears to be someone who cannot burst into a sprint, cannot track back, and cannot physically compete when it truly counts — particularly late in games.”

However, even though the forward is facing difficulties, Liverpool lacks viable solutions. With results plummeting and confidence wavering, Slot has been under relentless scrutiny. The Dutch manager has acknowledged that he is grappling with the pace at which to incorporate his new signing.

For Warnock, Slot must make a decisive choice before the situation deteriorates further. He believes the manager’s future may depend on the rate of improvement.

“If Liverpool suffers another significant defeat in the upcoming weeks, the board will begin to pose serious questions,” he cautioned. “I still believe he can turn things around — but he must act with conviction. The fanbase is anxious, and this is not the title defense anyone anticipated.”

Warnock also stressed that the answer does not lie in a tactical overhaul or a major rebuild — but rather a return to fundamentals.

“All they require at this moment is a hard-fought 1-0 victory,” he remarked. “Fight. Defend. Endure together. Confidence is restored through results — not through excuses.”

Slot’s initial months have been complicated by the necessity to integrate several new players following an unexpectedly tumultuous summer. The ongoing emotional repercussions from transfers and squad alterations — including Diogo Jota’s exit — have intensified the challenge.

Despite this, expectations remain elevated for a club that dominated the Premier League just a few months ago.

Isak is not the only player whose situation is raising concerns within the club. Warnock highlighted Federico Chiesa — another prominent addition — and suggested that Slot does not yet fully trust the Italian winger.

“Slot believes he requires options on the bench, which is why Isak remains in the squad,” Warnock clarified. “He appears unconvinced by Chiesa, leading him to depend on Isak even when the Spaniard— I mean, the Swede — is not prepared.”

One player Warnock is confident should be at the forefront is Hugo Ekitiké, whose agility and quickness could provide the team with what they are currently lacking.

“He ought to be Liverpool’s primary striker at this moment,” he asserted. “He is more fit, quicker, and better at troubling defenders.”

Liverpool finds itself in a delicate situation. A club founded on intensity, aggression, and unyielding ambition is now in search of its identity — and the pressure on Arne Slot’s management is increasing with each point lost.

The once-dominant Anfield atmosphere has faded. Opponents now perceive opportunity instead of dread. And fans who rejoiced in a title victory just months ago are now questioning how everything has unraveled so swiftly.

Warnock’s advice to Slot is straightforward: make decisive choices — or face the possibility of being succeeded by someone who will.

“Liverpool’s management is not typically known for hasty reactions,” he remarked. “However, every club has its limits. Slot must deliver results immediately.”

The situation surrounding Alexander Isak has become emblematic of Liverpool’s broader challenges: significant investment coupled with declining returns, aspirations of supremacy overshadowed by unease.

Whether a temporary reset will suffice — or if more profound changes are necessary — is yet to be determined.

For the time being, Liverpool must strive for every point. The title may already be out of reach… but the fight to salvage their season is just beginning.
