Liverpool is targeting a £41m defender as the urgency for defensive reinforcements escalates.

According to Paul Joyce, Liverpool is eyeing €40m Parma player to address their defensive deficiencies.

Liverpool is considering a move for Giovanni Leoni of Parma as their defensive options diminish.

Defensive reinforcements have become a priority.

As the Premier League season approaches quickly, Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcements has shifted from a theoretical issue to an urgent requirement. Arne Slot is confronting a precarious situation in central defense.

As reported by Paul Joyce in The Times, the club has now focused on Giovanni Leoni, an 18-year-old center-back from Parma, whose potential has made him one of the most discussed defensive talents in Italy.

Leoni, referred to as the “new Fabio Cannavaro” by some Italian media, is viewed as a long-term solution but may also be required to step into a more immediate role due to Liverpool’s limited resources in defense.

Squad depth is under pressure.

Virgil van Dijk, still the cornerstone of Liverpool’s defense, is now 34 years old. Behind him, the options are becoming increasingly scarce.

Joe Gomez has already encountered an Achilles issue during pre-season, while Ibrahima Konaté is in the last year of his contract.

The sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million, while financially beneficial, has further reduced the available pool.

This leaves Slot with few reliable options and no clear successor to Van Dijk.

The interest in Leoni clearly indicates that the club is looking beyond just short-term solutions.

Talent acknowledged, but the deal is complicated.

At 6’5” and already capped at the Italy U19 level, Leoni has made only 17 Serie A appearances for Parma, yet his value continues to increase.

Having joined Parma from Sampdoria in a €4.8 million transfer last summer, his progress has been described as “meteoric.”

His rise from Padova’s youth system to Italy’s top league in less than two years illustrates the rapid development that Liverpool’s scouting department has been tracking.

Nonetheless, the financial aspects and timing could pose challenges. Parma is reportedly seeking €40 million to let Leoni go, and sources from Italy suggest that the player prefers to stay in Serie A, with Inter Milan currently being the frontrunners.

There is also a sentiment from the player’s camp that spending another year at Parma might enhance his international prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Liverpool supporters are becoming increasingly anxious about the uncertainty surrounding central defense. The situation has been developing throughout the summer, but it now seems to have reached a critical juncture.

The interest in Giovanni Leoni is certainly thrilling. At just 18 years old and standing at 6’5”, this ball-playing center-back has already been dubbed the “new Cannavaro,” fulfilling many criteria.

Furthermore, considering that he looks up to Virgil van Dijk as his idol, it’s clear why fans are captivated.

However, fascination can only take you so far. This is not the moment for solely long-term strategies. Liverpool’s defensive lineup is extremely thin.

With Gomez already noted for fitness issues and Konaté’s contract nearing its end, there is no time for delay.

If Leoni is prepared and willing to make the move, the club should act swiftly. Otherwise, fans will expect to see a more seasoned option brought in before the transfer window closes.

At this point, Leoni symbolizes potential, but Liverpool requires a solid presence.
