Liverpool: Romano discloses Reds’ change of heart regarding January transfers as FSG aims to secure £70m signing.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Liverpool has reversed its stance on making acquisitions during the upcoming winter transfer window.

In the summer, Liverpool made a bold move by investing over £400m in a comprehensive squad revamp after clinching their 20th Premier League title at the conclusion of the previous season.

Head coach Arne Slot was allocated resources to assemble his own team after effectively utilizing Jurgen Klopp’s squad last season, but it seems they may have overhauled too much in one transfer window, leading to a significant decline in performance.

The Reds set a new British transfer record on two occasions to acquire Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, in addition to making substantial investments to bring in Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni.

These acquisitions were intended to compensate for the departures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, and Jarell Quansah.

Currently, it is difficult to dispute that this overhaul has been largely unsuccessful, as Liverpool has suffered eight losses in their last eleven matches across all competitions, been eliminated from the Carabao Cup, and fallen in the Champions League rankings.

Many of their summer signings, along with other key players, have faced challenges this season, highlighting the necessity for additional signings to enhance certain positions.

A key focus for Liverpool is to recruit at least one new centre-back, given that Ibrahima Konate is nearing the end of his contract, while Virgil van Dijk’s performance has declined and he requires replacement.

Marc Guehi is still a potential target, but a report from the Spanish outlet Fichajes suggests they ‘wish to finalize a deal’ for Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio, who has a £70m release clause in his contract.

The report states:

‘Liverpool is keen on acquiring Gonçalo Inácio from Sporting CP during the winter transfer window due to the defensive issues the team has exhibited in the initial months of the season.’

Romano, on the other hand, does not specify any of Liverpool’s targets for January, but he has indicated that their approach to making one or two signings during the winter has shifted.

“I believe it’s a possibility [that Liverpool will make a signing in January],” Romano stated on the Here We Go Podcast.

“If you had asked me this question in September or early October, I would have likely said that Liverpool was not looking to make any further moves because they were quite satisfied with their summer transfer window. They spent a significant amount of money.

“Liverpool was genuinely enthusiastic about seeing this team perform, even though they faced a challenging start in the long run.

“Now, we are already over three months into the season. Liverpool is struggling significantly, and they are now contemplating the possibility of engaging in the January transfer window with some level of activity.

“We will have to wait and see regarding the positions, as this could depend on the upcoming weeks. Therefore, no decisions will be made today, tomorrow, or next week. It may take some time, possibly weeks, to determine which positions they wish to address.

“Romano concluded: “However, Liverpool is beginning to internally consider the possibility of adding perhaps one player in the January transfer window, and again, depending on injuries, opportunities, and the market, we will see what actions they decide to take.”
