Liverpool is preparing a world-record bid for elite star keen on a blockbuster transfer – report

An ambitious report suggests that Liverpool is formulating a record-setting offer for Alessandro Bastoni, with sources providing a significant update on the future of the Inter Milan star.

Liverpool made a strong effort to enhance their centre-back options during the summer, reaching personal agreements with Marc Guehi. The Reds also finalized a £35 million deal with Crystal Palace, but the transfer fell through at the last moment as Oliver Glasner’s team was unable to secure a suitable replacement.

Liverpool continues to pursue Guehi and is optimistic about acquiring him in 2026. They are facing competition from several top clubs, including Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, although a journalist has excluded Barcelona from the equation.

Liverpool aims to recruit a world-class defender to secure their backline for the future. Virgil van Dijk remains a top performer but is now 34 years old, indicating that a successor must be identified, while Liverpool is also working to secure Ibrahima Konate with a new contract to definitively end his links with Real Madrid.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), are seriously considering Bastoni as an alternative to Guehi.

Reports indicate that Liverpool is ‘preparing a €95m bid’ (£83m) to lure the Italian star away from Inter.

If a transfer occurs at that price, Bastoni would become the world’s most expensive defender, surpassing Harry Maguire (£80m) and Josko Gvardiol (£77m).

Fichajes is not regarded as one of Spain’s most trustworthy transfer news sources, so the assertion that Liverpool could offer €95m for Bastoni in January should be viewed with skepticism. However, we can confirm Liverpool’s interest in the player, with a potential move at a later date being plausible…

2026 is set to be a significant year for Alessandro Bastoni – Sources

A source informed our transfer expert Graeme Bailey on December 20: “Alessandro is content at Inter and in Italy, but at 26, there is a belief that he may seek an opportunity abroad. He is performing at his peak, and few players in the world can match his level.

“2026 is going to be a significant year for him.”

Sources indicate that Liverpool is monitoring the situation of the 26-year-old, preparing for the moment he expresses a desire to leave Inter.

However, similar to Guehi, Arne Slot’s team will encounter competition from other top clubs for Bastoni. We understand that he is also attracting interest from Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.

A mega-money transfer of Bastoni to Liverpool would allow them to build on their remarkable summer window in 2025. FSG not only broke the club’s transfer record twice, first with Florian Wirtz and then with Alexander Isak, but they also secured players like Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool transfer news: Semenyo latest; Alexander-Arnold questioned

In the meantime, Liverpool remains linked with a potential late intervention in Manchester City’s pursuit of Antoine Semenyo, which has elicited a strong response from our sources, who have also provided updates on that drawn-out transfer to the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds are attempting to prevent Konate from rejoining Trent Alexander-Arnold in Madrid, following his contract expiration earlier this year.

Steven Gerrard has criticized Alexander-Arnold for his decision to move and has outlined the areas where Liverpool currently falls short.
