Liverpool came from behind to defeat the Japanese team Yokohama Marinos, with Florian Wirtz scoring his first goal since joining for a club record fee from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, and Rio Ngumoha also standing out.

Asahi Uenaka opened the scoring in the second half, but Wirtz quickly equalized. Shortly after coming on, young midfielder Trey Nyoni found the back post to give Liverpool the lead.

While it wasn’t a classic match at the Nissan Stadium, Liverpool will be satisfied with the playing time that many key players received. The Reds will now return to the UK to prepare for their double-header against Athletic Club on Monday.

Winners

Mohamed Salah delivered some excellent passes, and Florian Wirtz exudes class. It seems reasonable to predict that he will become a significant star at Anfield; there’s a reason Liverpool was willing to invest heavily to sign him.

Wirtz took some time to adjust to the poor pitch, but once he did, his touch was exceptional given the circumstances. The German is a pleasure to watch: reminiscent of Philippe Coutinho, but with greater intensity in pressing and running. And he’s only 22.

Even younger, at just 16, Rio Ngumoha also shone. He dribbles excellently and finished his goal with remarkable composure. He too is destined for a bright future in his career.

Losers

No one performed particularly poorly, although Liverpool does need to tighten up defensively. The biggest loser was the dreadful playing surface, which fortunately does not seem to have caused any injuries.

The ball bounced around without settling, which certainly did not contribute to a sharp passing game. It was far from a memorable match, but the grass played its role effectively. Nevertheless, Wirtz performed well, which is undoubtedly a positive indication.

Player ratings

Giorgi Mamardashvili (6). With Alisson Becker absent for personal matters, the Georgian had very little to do, so it would be understandable if he went unnoticed. He made one routine save that was expected of him, and there was little he could do about the goal that got past him.

Conor Bradley (6). He found himself in a few dead ends and was not heavily involved in the attack. The Liverpool build-up was generally lacking in fluidity, and the first goal came from his side.

Ibrahima Konate (5). He committed several unnecessary fouls. It wasn’t his finest performance in possession, but that could be attributed to the condition of the pitch. He was nowhere near where he needed to be for the opening goal.

Virgil van Dijk (7). He was dominant in the air and effectively dealt with a Yokohama Marinos counter-attack after Konate lost possession at the halfway line. Reliable.

Milos Kerkez (6). He did not make a significant impact going forward and lost possession in a risky area early in the first half. Generally decent, but nothing beyond that.

Ryan Gravenberch (6). Back in his preferred midfield position, the Dutchman appeared more comfortable in the center of the field. However, it would be best to forget his attempts at long throws.

Dominik Szoboszlai (6). Making late runs from deep, he could become a valuable asset for Liverpool next season. He poses a goal threat, and there are plenty of skilled passers who can find him.

Mohamed Salah (7). He was more engaged than in the match against AC Milan and is building connections with his teammates; the Egyptian’s passing skills were prominently displayed here. He will enjoy playing alongside Wirtz.

Florian Wirtz (8). Operating as the No.10, the German playmaker was pivotal to nearly every offensive move. He began the match slowly but found his rhythm as he adapted to a rather poor pitch, ultimately scoring his first goal in a Reds jersey.

Cody Gakpo (7). He struck the post early in the game and appeared quite energetic. With Luis Diaz now signed to Bayern Munich, he is expected to secure the left wing position as the new season approaches. This shouldn’t be a concern, as he performed well once again.

Hugo Ekitike (6). Making his debut after a transfer that could total $106 million (£79 million) with add-ons, the Frenchman struggled to find his touch frequently. However, he did press effectively and showed great willingness to run.

Substitutes

Darwin Nunez (45′) (5). He missed a chance from six or seven yards out when Salah set him up with an excellent pass and was caught offside almost immediately after entering the game. This is nothing new for him. Similarly, he was eager to make runs.

Curtis Jones (45′) (6). Like his teammates, he required some time to adjust to the playing surface, but he was sufficiently tidy once he did. He played a key role in the sequence that led to Wirtz’s goal, even if the flick into the path of the former Bayer Leverkusen player may not have been intentional. He should have earned a couple of free kicks, but the referee disagreed.

Wataru Endo (59′) (6). As captain on home turf, it was a nice gesture for him to wear the armband. Playing as a center-back, one wonders if this might be his best chance for playing time in the upcoming season.

Kostas Tsimikas (59′) (6). Filling in at center-half, this is not his preferred position. However, like Endo, he stepped up when needed.

Rio Ngumoha (63′) (8). The pitch was not ideal for a player whose style revolves around driving forward with the ball, yet he managed to excel regardless. He was electrifying upon his arrival and finished his goal brilliantly.

Trey Nyoni (63′) (7). He netted a well-placed goal at the far post. Like Ngumoha, he is a genuine talent and displayed great composure in possession.

Andy Robertson (63′) (6). He was reliable defensively, though he didn’t have to do much beyond that.

Alexis Mac Allister (63′) (6). Returning from injury, this is a significant advantage for Liverpool; the Argentine will need time to regain his full form. This half-hour was primarily about that, and he performed adequately.

Jeremie Frimpong (63′) (7). He delivered a well-placed cross that led to the Nyoni goal, creating a threat in the box. He was energetic once more, just as he was against AC Milan.

Harvey Elliott (63′) (6). He found it difficult to engage in the match, but he didn’t make any notable mistakes. Received a yellow card.
