Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in the Premier League, losing 3-2 to Brentford on Saturday night, with Arne Slot’s team now at risk of trailing Arsenal by seven points.

John Aldridge, a Liverpool legend, has urged Reds head coach Arne Slot to “step up” after the 3-2 loss at Brentford.

Slot’s squad has now experienced four straight defeats in the Premier League and could find themselves seven points behind the league leaders, Arsenal, if the Gunners secure a win against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Dango Ouattara opened the scoring for Brentford with a classic long throw just five minutes into the match.

Kevin Schade then exploited a significant gap in Liverpool’s defense to extend the hosts’ lead to 2-0.

Milos Kerkez provided a glimmer of hope for Slot’s team by scoring just before halftime.

However, Brentford quickly regained their two-goal cushion with a penalty after Virgil van Dijk was deemed to have fouled an opponent in the Liverpool penalty area following a VAR review.

A late goal from Mohamed Salah created a tense finish in west London, but Slot’s side could not find the equalizer. This defeat leaves Liverpool in sixth place ahead of Sunday’s matches.

Former Reds forward Aldridge has voiced his concern over Liverpool’s decline. Slot’s team has now lost five of their last six matches across all competitions.

“This is incredibly disappointing and worrying in numerous ways, not just for tonight but for the entire season; defensively, it’s been shocking,” he stated on X (Twitter).

“There’s a lack of cohesion, desire, and accountability! Arne needs to significantly step up.”

When asked for his thoughts in the post-match interview with TNT Sports, Slot remarked: “If Mo can go on a scoring streak, it will certainly be crucial for the team.

“However, it’s not only about scoring goals but also about preventing them. We have conceded one, two, or three goals in so many matches now, often within the first five minutes.”

The team would benefit from having players who can score goals, but it is equally important for us to maintain a clean sheet as a unit.

This responsibility does not solely fall on the last line of defense; it is a collective effort. We need to improve.

“Ideally, you want all your players to be available. However, that is not our current reality. The players we do have must deliver results.

This is a requirement for any season. Winning duels is essential, yet we are currently falling short in that area. This is something I find concerning.
