Liverpool is set to see 10 players depart, including 5 academy players, as Arne Slot initiates changes in the post-Jurgen Klopp era…
Liverpool to see significant player turnover as Arne Slot takes charge after Jurgen Klopp’s era.
As Arne Slot takes charge in the post-Jurgen Klopp era, 10 players, including 5 from the academy, are set to leave Liverpool as part of an overhaul.
Ten players who were out of contract at Liverpool have officially departed Anfield as Arne Slot takes charge, with Thiago being one of the notable names leaving the club.
The Reds had previously announced that a group of players, all with contracts expiring in June, would not be staying at Anfield and are now free to find new clubs. Slot has recently started his work and is evaluating the squad left behind by Jurgen Klopp.
Thiago, who joined from Bayern Munich in 2020, is one of the players allowed to leave following a period marred by injuries during his time at Liverpool.
Despite showing flashes of his talent, he never quite reached the consistent level of performance expected of him.
Joel Matip, who played a crucial role in the 2019 Champions League final victory, is another significant departure. Alongside Virgil van Dijk, he formed a strong defensive partnership, but like Thiago, he struggled with consistent injury issues.
Despite Klopp expressing his desire for Liverpool to offer Matip a new contract in recognition of his years of service, this has not materialized.
Klopp stated, “I’m confident that the club will handle the situation appropriately, as they should. I believe they have already communicated with Joel about the situation, ensuring his well-being during his recovery. Moving forward, we will need to make a decision regarding Joel’s future.”
“It’s a standard procedure, but Joel deserves our full support, which he will receive. Personally, I believe he deserves a contract extension, but ultimately, the decision is not mine to make. I am not authorized to finalize any agreements.”
Elsewhere academy graduates Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf, and Mateusz Musialowski have been granted permission to depart.
Lewis, who made his senior debut in an FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, has been on loan for the past four seasons.
Frauendorf’s first start also came against Shrewsbury, while Musialowski made his debut in March of this year.
Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne, and Cody Pennington are among the other academy players whose time at Liverpool has reached its conclusion. They will now need to look for opportunities elsewhere.
Manager Slot faces several significant decisions in his first summer at the helm. The futures of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez are still up for debate.
Salah could potentially fetch a substantial transfer fee and has attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, whereas Nunez has struggled to find the back of the net consistently despite his hefty price tag.
Here is the complete roster of Liverpool players who have departed: Thiago Alcantara, Joel Matip, Adam Lewis, Melkamu Frauendorf, Mateusz Musialowski, Nathan Giblin, Francis Gyimah, Luke Hewitson, Niall Osborne, and Cody Pennington.
