Liverpool injury update: Latest news on Jeremie Frimpong, Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Alisson Becker’s return dates.

Liverpool’s injury news during the international break indicates that Alexander Isak is set to return soon after recovering from his injury, but Arne Slot may have five other players unavailable for the match against Man City.

Following the international break, Liverpool expects to have three players back in action, although Jeremie Frimpong will undergo a scan to assess the severity of the injury that caused him to leave the field while representing the Netherlands.

While several key players may return, new injury concerns have arisen from the international break.

Liverpool is hopeful of reintegrating multiple first-team players when club football resumes after the international break, yet Arne Slot is still confronted with several challenges ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City.

Hugo Ekitike seems to have fully recovered from a dead leg that led to his early exit during the Reds’ defeat to Brighton on March 21. He participated in both of France’s recent international friendlies against Brazil and Colombia, starting and scoring in the former.

This is a significant boost for Slot as his team seeks to overcome City at the Etihad before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final just days later.

Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, who both missed the match against Brighton just before the break, are among those eager to return to the pitch as the Reds strive to compete on three fronts.

In other news, one player may be ready to return within the next week after months of recovery, while another seems to have encountered a setback.

Here’s the latest on Liverpool’s injury situation and expected return dates…

Jeremie Frimpong

Having already faced three periods on the sidelines during a challenging debut season at Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong suffered yet another injury setback while on international duty with the Netherlands.

The full-back started Tuesday’s friendly against Ecuador on the bench before coming on for Reds teammate Cody Gakpo at the beginning of the second half.

However, Frimpong lasted less than 15 minutes on the field before being substituted for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke and promptly headed down the tunnel.

At the conclusion of the match, Dutch manager Ronald Koeman confirmed that he “had to substitute” Frimpong due to an injury “blow” affecting the 25-year-old.

No additional updates were given, but we can expect one from Slot when he addresses the media prior to this weekend’s FA Cup quarter-final clash.

If the match against City is too soon for him, the Reds may once again need to rely on a makeshift right-back like Dominik Szoboszlai or Curtis Jones, hoping that Frimpong can recover in time to face Paris Saint-Germain on April 8 or Fulham on April 11.

Potential return date: Man City (a) on April 4

Mohamed Salah

The last update from Slot indicated that the Liverpool manager was optimistic about Salah’s readiness to return after the international break, despite him missing both of Egypt’s friendlies due to injury.

The loss to Brighton was just one of several Premier League matches the departing star has missed due to injury since joining Liverpool in 2017, marking his first absence enforced by fitness issues in over two years.

“The good thing for Liverpool is that we go into an international break; the bad thing for Egypt is that he can’t participate,” Slot remarked on March 20.

“We are hopeful that, based on Mo’s past performances, he can recover more quickly than other players might in similar circumstances.

“He takes excellent care of his body, and history has demonstrated that he can return sooner than others. However, with only two weeks until we play again, let’s remain hopeful that he can make a comeback during that time.

Expected return date: Manchester City (a) on April 4

Alisson Becker

Following his absence alongside Salah in the Brighton match due to an undisclosed injury, Alisson’s participation with Brazil mirrored that of his Egyptian counterpart.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who has faced fitness challenges multiple times this season, withdrew from the Brazilian national team citing an “injury,” as reported by the football federation of Brazil. Meanwhile, Slot, during his last post-match press conference on March 21, stated, “let’s see afterwards,” confirming that Alisson would “definitely be out during the international break.”

In an update shared on Instagram that same day, the goalkeeper expressed: “Unfortunately, I’ll be out of action for a while. I’m already working hard to return stronger. Thank you for the support.”

The international break has offered a good opportunity for rest and recovery, suggesting he might be fit to start against City on Saturday. However, if he is not ready, Giorgi Mamardashvili will once again be called upon in the meantime.

Expected return date: Manchester City (a) on April 4

Alexander Isak

After suffering a leg fracture against Tottenham in December, Alexander Isak is finally close to making his return to the field.

The Premier League’s most expensive signing has resumed training for several weeks, although he did not participate in Sweden’s World Cup qualification matches.

Slot has not indicated whether Isak will play a role against City in the FA Cup, but the Liverpool manager previously mentioned that his striker would be “available” for the Champions League quarter-finals against PSG, scheduled for April 8 and 14.

“He will be available [against PSG], but the question is what you mean by ‘ready’,” Slot informed the media.

“If you’re looking for the player who performed exceptionally a year ago against us in the Carabao Cup final, who was too good for us that day, then I would express my doubts about that after months of absence. However, I anticipate I can utilize him effectively.

On March 17, he stated: “The presence of [Isak] on the pitch indicates that he is getting closer to rejoining us.”

Expected return date: PSG (a) on April 8

Federico Chiesa

Following a period of illness, Federico Chiesa came on as a late substitute for Liverpool in their last three matches across all competitions before the international break.

He then joined the Italy squad but was later sent back home after being considered unfit to participate in his nation’s ultimately unsuccessful World Cup play-off double header against Northern Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The condition of Federico Chiesa was evaluated upon his arrival at the Federal Technical Centre, and he was ruled out for the next two matches. In agreement with the club, he departed from the national team’s training camp,” the Azzurri stated in an announcement.

This situation has raised some uncertainty regarding Chiesa’s availability for the FA Cup clash with City, although the 28-year-old would likely have had a limited role at the Etihad regardless.

Expected return date: Man City (a) on April 4

Wataru Endo

The latest long-term absentee for Liverpool is Wataru Endo, whose season appears to have concluded prematurely after he was taken off on a stretcher during his first Premier League start of the season back in February.

After sustaining a foot injury, the 33-year-old Japan international was carried off the field against Sunderland and is believed to be aiming for a return in time for this summer’s World Cup.

“Wataru will be sidelined for an extended period; we cannot specify how long, but it will be significant,” Slot remarked on February 19.

On February 28, Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu disclosed that he had been informed that Endo’s left ankle surgery “went well, but I lack the specifics.”

Moriyasu added: “The objective is for [Endo] to be prepared for the World Cup, so the rehabilitation process following surgery is being planned.

“To participate in the World Cup, he, the club, and we all share the same understanding.”

Expected return date: June 2026

Conor Bradley

Conor Bradley suffered ruptured knee ligaments due to an awkward landing during the goalless draw against Arsenal in January, leading to surgery for the right-back.

When the club announced his surgery on January 11, they did not provide a timeline for his return. Since then, he has not played and is widely anticipated to miss the remainder of the season.

Expected return date: Summer 2026

Giovanni Leoni

Another defender, Giovanni Leoni, experienced a torn anterior cruciate ligament during his Liverpool debut in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton in September.

The 19-year-old Italian centre-back, who joined from Parma in the summer, is expected to be sidelined for about 12 months following his surgery. This means he is likely to miss the rest of this season and potentially the beginning of the next one.

Expected return date: September 2026
