Liverpool injury, suspension list, and return dates against Sunderland: Latest on Joe Gomez, Alexander Isak, and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool injury update: Latest news on Jeremie Frimpong, Alexander Isak, and Conor Bradley, along with their return dates.

The defensive injury crisis worsens for the champions following the latest setback.

Liverpool’s aspirations to secure a top-five finish in the Premier League were hindered when they suffered a stoppage-time defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.

In a bid to stay competitive in the race for the Premier League’s top four, Liverpool is set to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.

Arne Slot’s team fell 2-1 to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Sunday, a disappointing outcome that leaves the Merseysiders with only one victory in their last seven league matches.

Compounding the situation, the versatile Dominik Szoboszlai received a red card in stoppage time for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, raising questions about who will fill the right-back position midweek amid a wave of injuries within the squad.

GIOVANNI LEONI

Status: Out

Type of injury: ACL

Estimated return date: Unknown

Nineteen-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni was brought in to support the Reds’ senior defenders but unfortunately sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury during his debut.

Liverpool remains optimistic about the young talent, who could form a solid partnership with 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet in the upcoming season.

JEREMIE FRIMPONG

Status: Out

Type of injury: Thigh

Estimated return date: February 22 (vs. Nottingham Forest)

Jeremie Frimpong was not previously regarded as injury-prone before joining Merseyside, but the muscle injury he sustained against Qarabag FK on January 28 marks the latest in a series of issues for him in the 2025-26 season.

The former Bayer Leverkusen winger has been ruled out of this match by Slot, who indicated that his recovery will require “a few weeks” in total.

JOE GOMEZ

Status: Major doubt

Type of injury: Knee/hip

Estimated return date: February 11 (vs. Sunderland)

Joe Gomez has been sidelined since his collision with Alisson Becker during Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Bournemouth on January 24. Although he is nearing a return, the 28-year-old remains a significant doubt for this upcoming match.

Slot remarked after the game against Man City that the club “doesn’t anticipate Joe [Gomez] being available for Wednesday, but there’s always a chance.”

ALEXANDER ISAK

Status: Out

Type of injury: Lower leg

Expected return date: March 21 (vs. Brighton & Hove Albion)

Summer acquisition Alexander Isak has had his debut season on Merseyside disrupted by injuries, and he is expected to be out for at least another month.

A tackle from Tottenham Hotspur’s Micky van de Ven in December resulted in a complicated lower leg injury, but Isak is projected to return to the field before the season concludes.

CONOR BRADLEY

Status: Out

Type of injury: Knee

Expected return date: Unknown

Conor Bradley will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a severe knee injury against Arsenal on January 8.

The 22-year-old right-back successfully underwent surgery for the injury last month, and the Reds are hopeful he can regain his form by the 2026-27 season.

LIVERPOOL SUSPENSION LIST

DOMINIK SZOBOSZLAI

Return date: February 14 (vs. Brighton)

Szoboszlai has arguably been Liverpool’s standout player during what has been a challenging season thus far, and his absence will be keenly felt on Wednesday.

The number eight filled in at right-back over the weekend due to injuries to both Frimpong and Bradley, and Slot will need to devise a strategy to address this gap against Sunderland.
