Liverpool Injury Update: Latest on Hugo Ekitike, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Cody Gakpo’s Return Dates.

The Reds are facing a growing list of injuries ahead of a crucial Premier League match.

This past weekend, Liverpool returned to winning form in the Premier League by defeating Brighton, but Arne Slot’s team suffered two new injuries during the match.

The frequently injured defender Joe Gomez left the field with a muscle issue after just 26 minutes, leading to Mohamed Salah stepping in as his replacement. Additionally, Dominik Szoboszlai sustained a concerning ankle injury towards the end of the game.

Injuries are accumulating for Liverpool, who had only four senior outfield players available on the bench for the Brighton match; however, there was some positive news.

Concerns were raised about Alexander Isak prior to the game after Slot indicated he had sustained a knock in the match against Inter Milan, but he managed to come off the bench to play the last 12 minutes at Anfield. Federico Chiesa also made an appearance after missing the trip to Italy due to illness.

Salah is expected to be out for an extended period as he competes in AFCON with Egypt, but Conor Bradley will be back in the squad for next weekend’s match against Tottenham after serving his one-match suspension.

With this context, here’s the latest on Liverpool’s injury situation…

Hugo Ekitike

The striker maintained his excellent scoring form with two goals against Brighton but was substituted before he could complete his hat-trick due to a potential injury.

Ekitike found the net within the first minute, setting Liverpool on the path to a vital victory, and scored again in the 60th minute for consecutive braces. He was replaced by Alexander Isak with 12 minutes left in the match.

Arne Slot did not seem to be questioned about Ekitike’s substitution after the match, implying that it may not be a serious issue.

Expected return date: December 20 vs Tottenham (A)

Dominik Szoboszlai

Arne Slot faced yet another injury dilemma when the versatile Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai went down with an injury late in the game against Brighton and had to be substituted.

He landed awkwardly after leaping to evade a collision and immediately seemed to be in discomfort as he received care on the field.

Slot confirmed after the match that he had incurred an injury.

“Dom [Szoboszlai], it was his ankle,” he stated. “It didn’t appear to be good when I first saw him. However, he possesses an incredible mentality, so let’s remain optimistic.”

It is still uncertain if he will be fit to compete against Tottenham next weekend.

Potential return date: Unknown

Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez participated in Liverpool’s loss to Brighton but only lasted 26 minutes before exiting due to injury, making way for Mohamed Salah.

He fell off the ball and briefly received medical attention before limping off with the club’s medical staff.

This is yet another setback for the player, who has been prone to injuries throughout his career and has already missed significant portions of this season.

In his post-match comments, Slot was somewhat reserved but did disclose that Gomez had sustained a muscle injury.

“When I have a player who leaves the field with a muscle injury like Joe, that’s typically not a good sign.

“I wouldn’t anticipate him being part of the squad next week [against Tottenham], but sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Jeremie Frimpong

Jeremie Frimpong’s short Liverpool tenure has thus far been overshadowed by injuries.

After transferring from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, he suffered a hamstring injury on the opening day of the season against Bournemouth and another one against Eintracht Frankfurt in October.

There were hopes that the Dutchman would be ready to face Brighton, but the match came too early for him, and he was not included in the squad.

Frimpong will be eager to return in the next match when Liverpool travels to Tottenham.

Slot is also optimistic about this, stating after the Brighton game: “The positive aspect is that Conor Bradley will return from suspension [next week], and typically Jeremie Frimpong will train with us as well.”

Potential return date: December 20 vs Tottenham (A)

Cody Gakpo

Liverpool supporters were anxious when Cody Gakpo was absent from training prior to their match against Inter Milan in the Champions League, and their worst fears were confirmed when Slot announced he would be sidelined for a period of time.

In a statement before the Brighton match, Slot disclosed that his fellow countryman was suffering from an unspecified muscular injury.

“It’s going to be weeks,” he stated. “With Cody, it’s a muscle injury.”

Potential return date: January 2026

Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo’s injury was disclosed in a dual update alongside Gakpo.

Although Endo may only play a minor role for Liverpool this season, as injuries accumulate, he could have served as a valuable depth option for Slot.

Regrettably for both players, it was confirmed before the Brighton game that the Japan international had incurred an ankle injury and would be unavailable for several weeks.

Slot remarked: “It’s going to be weeks [for Gakpo and Endo]. Cody has a muscle injury, and Wata has an ankle injury.”

Potential return date: January 2026

Giovanni Leoni

Giovanni Leoni experienced the worst possible beginning to his Liverpool tenure, suffering an ACL injury during his debut in a Carabao Cup clash with Southampton.

He is anticipated to be out for the entire season.

“He is not in a good place, of course, because he tore his ACL and it means he will be out for a year,” Slot commented regarding the young Italian. “Being so young and arriving in a new country and performing so well in your first game… it’s very difficult to find the positive side.

“There’s never a positive side – but you always try to look at a positive side and that is that he is still so young, so he has many years ahead of him after he recovers from such a serious injury.”

Potential return date: Autumn 2026
