Jurgen Klopp may be called upon to rescue Liverpool’s season as another manager is being considered as a long-term successor to Slot.

Liverpool has identified a long-term candidate to replace Arne Slot as plans for Jurgen Klopp begin to take shape.

Reports indicate that Liverpool sees Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique as a potential long-term replacement for Arne Slot if they choose to part ways with him.

The Reds have suffered nine losses in their last 12 matches, a dismal streak that has led to the collapse of their Premier League title defense before Christmas.

A 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday marked the third consecutive game in which they lost by a three-goal margin – their worst performance in 73 years.

Slot led Liverpool to the title in his inaugural season at the helm on Merseyside, but a disastrous second season following a summer spending spree exceeding £400 million has raised questions about his future.

The Dutch coach still has the support of the Liverpool management, but a revealing interview with Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones after the PSV loss highlighted the depth of the club’s troubles.

Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down last year after a nine-year tenure, is currently the frontrunner to take over from Slot if Liverpool decides a change is warranted.

The German, who is now the Head of Global Sport for Red Bull, has not dismissed the idea of a return in the past, with The Sun reporting that the club might look to him to salvage their season.

The report indicates that this would be a temporary arrangement, where Klopp would be asked to step in until the end of the season.

PSG manager Enrique is viewed as a long-term target by Liverpool’s ownership, according to the report. The Spaniard is among the most esteemed coaches in global football, having led PSG to a long-awaited Champions League title last season.

With experience managing in Italy, Spain, and France, as well as leading the Spanish national team, Enrique has previously expressed a desire to work in England in the future.

“I primarily follow the Premier League as I aspire to work in England,” Enrique stated in 2023.

“I wouldn’t join just any team, but rather one that has the potential to achieve significant accomplishments, which considerably narrows down the options. I don’t want to get my hopes up, honestly, as there are numerous contenders.”

Slot will aim to improve the situation before any severe actions are taken. Liverpool faces West Ham United in east London on Sunday, marking a crucial match for the former Feyenoord manager.
