Liverpool received a new penalty ruling as an agreement was reached following the Liverpool manager’s outrage.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has shared his opinion on the penalty situation involving Alejandro Garnacho during Chelsea’s victory over Liverpool.

Gallagher has concurred with the choice not to grant Chelsea a penalty in their 2-1 win against Liverpool. The Reds left Stamford Bridge without any points on Saturday after Estevao scored a goal in the 95th minute.

Liverpool had leveled the score with Cody Gakpo’s goal after Moises Caicedo’s opener in the first half, but the late goal resulted in their third consecutive defeat.

Chelsea’s manager Enzo Maresca received a second yellow card from referee Anthony Taylor due to his enthusiastic celebrations following the winning goal. His first yellow card was issued in the first half after he was infuriated by the decision not to award a penalty to Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho, who made his first Premier League start for Chelsea after moving from Manchester United, fell in the penalty area following a challenge from Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai. Despite calls for a penalty, Taylor rejected the appeals.

VAR upheld the decision, with the official Match Centre X account stating: “The referee’s decision of no penalty was reviewed and confirmed by VAR – the contact from Szoboszlai on Garnacho was considered minimal.”

Maresca’s objections resulted in his booking. Gallagher, speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, shared his thoughts on the incident and the overall officiating of the match.

He remarked: “There is a slight touch, that is undeniable, but does that touch propel Garnacho through the air? No.

“This match showcased exemplary refereeing. The teams were permitted to compete. The referee established a tolerance level that everyone adhered to. It was an excellent match, and the referee contributed to that.”

Pundit Jay Bothroyd agreed, stating: “Garnacho was attempting to deceive the referee into calling a foul. Szoboszlai was aware of this.

There seems to be a general agreement regarding the decision, as commentator Gary Neville noted during the match: “Anthony Taylor was in an excellent position. He was observing the play. That is not a penalty.

“He has made the right call. There was a slight struggle, but it certainly does not warrant a penalty. In fact, he ends up throwing himself to the ground.

“He is watching closely. He understands exactly what transpires.

“I recognize that sometimes mistakes are made, but he (Maresca) simply needs to take a step back and relax. I am unsure who is advising him, suggesting that it is a penalty.”
