Jurgen Klopp remark speaks volumes as Trent Alexander-Arnold wants Liverpool reunion…
Jurgen Klopp’s comments carry significant weight as Trent Alexander-Arnold seeks a reunion with Liverpool.
After his departure was confirmed ahead of his transfer to Real Madrid, Trent Alexander-Arnold faced boos from some Liverpool supporters.
Jurgen Klopp has clearly stated his expectations for Liverpool fans when Trent Alexander-Arnold makes his return to Anfield.
Many Reds fans were disappointed that the 26-year-old allowed his contract to expire before moving to Real Madrid.
During his last few matches for the club, where he secured two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup among other accolades, he was booed by some.
The England international has encountered a challenging start in Spain.
After being thrust into competition with Dani Carvajal for the right-back position in Xabi Alonso’s squad, Alexander-Arnold has faced an injury that initially cast doubt on his availability for Real’s Champions League clash at Anfield on November 4.
However, having made significant strides in his recovery, he is expected to be fit for that match. It will be interesting to observe the kind of reception he receives from the home crowd.
Former Reds manager Klopp will be hoping for a warm welcome after expressing his dissatisfaction with the fans’ response to Alexander-Arnold at the conclusion of last season, following the announcement of his departure from his childhood club. The German admitted he was so upset that he turned off the television.
At an LFC Foundation event in May, Klopp remarked: “I don’t want to dictate your thoughts. I can tell you that your thoughts are misguided.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t be angry or disappointed; I’m saying don’t forget. This club remembers everything.
“I watched the match when he came on and I heard the boos. I turned off the TV. Honestly, I couldn’t have been more disheartened at that moment. This is not who we are, 100 percent, no.
Klopp, who resigned as manager a year prior, emphasized that fans should acknowledge Alexander-Arnold’s priceless contribution to the club after progressing through the youth system.
He remarked: “He gave everything he had and embodies the Liverpool badge. I often hear from fans about the question: ‘Why didn’t he renew his contract?’ and the financial discussions: ‘He leaves without a transfer fee.’ The owners must be frustrated.
“This young man, at just 18 years old, scored a free-kick in Hoffenheim, which was crucial for our Champions League qualification [through a play-off].
“During the match against Barcelona [in the Champions League], he executed the most audacious play and assisted the goal for 4-0, a scoreline and match that is unlikely to be replicated.
Yet, he will be playing for another club next year, and we must determine how to handle that.
Liverpool has five matches before Real Madrid visits Anfield, beginning with Sunday’s home game against Manchester United.
