Pep Lijnders, Liverpool’s assistant manager, has stated that Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Jurgen Klopp receives a boost as Liverpool’s Salah, Nunez, and Szoboszlai are all in the running to play at Wembley.Dominik Szoboszlai will be evaluated further before the EFL Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.

During Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over Luton Town in the Premier League, none of the three players were able to participate. Salah and Nunez were unable to play due to injuries they picked up in the previous weekend’s match against Brentford.

Szoboszlai has missed the last four games due to a hamstring injury, but Klopp hinted at a possible return at Wembley. Lijnders took over media duties ahead of the EFL Cup clash and did not rule out Salah, Nunez, or Szoboszlai for the upcoming match. Unfortunately, Liverpool’s long-term injury list includes Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic, Joel Matip, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, and Curtis Jones, all of whom are unavailable.

Prior to the EFL Cup fixtures, it is customary for Klopp to delegate media responsibilities to assistant manager Lijnders. He mentioned that Salah, Nunez, or Szoboszlai may still be available for the upcoming match against the Blues.

Nonetheless, Liverpool will be without eight players due to long-term injuries: Alisson Becker (hamstring), Trent Alexander-Arnold (knee), Ben Doak (knee), Stefan Bajcetic (calf), Joel Matip (ACL), Diogo Jota (knee), Thiago Alcantara (muscle), and Curtis Jones (shin).

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com on Friday morning, Lijnders confirmed that Jones may return to action before the March international break, while the other seven confirmed absentees from the Reds will require more time to recover.

“We are facing a hectic schedule once again, with matches every three days. It’s crucial for us to monitor the players closely, making the most of every minute and every day. This applies to Mo, Dom, and Darwin,” Lijnders stated.

“With just two training sessions left, we will assess their condition and make a decision at the last minute. As for the rest, we are aware that their recovery will take longer.

“Ali is dealing with a muscle injury, Trent with LCL, Jota with MCL, and Curtis with a high ankle sprain. Their return will be delayed. Curtis is expected to be the first one back around the international break, while the others will return after that period.”

Liverpool is set to participate in their 14th EFL Cup final, extending their record, just days after defeating Luton in the Premier League. This achievement mirrors their success against Chelsea in January. The team currently holds a four-point lead in the standings as they prepare for the final. Lijnders confirmed that all players emerged unscathed from Wednesday’s match. Despite the intense schedule, the players are focused on proper recovery to maintain their performance levels.

When asked about any player injuries during the midweek, Klopp’s assistant replied, “To my knowledge, there haven’t been any. The players had a day off yesterday, but for us, a day off means they still come in for treatment. And, of course, we have to prepare for the final.

“But for the players, it’s about proper recovery. They all understand the importance of utilizing this time, especially when you have matches every three days and some players have to play more due to injuries.

“So, they are taking good care of their bodies and doing everything they can to stay fresh and fit. But as you know, with our style of play, respecting the recovery process is just as important as delivering a strong performance.”

Liverpool emerged victorious over Chelsea in the 2021-22 EFL Cup final, securing their ninth title in the history of the tournament, surpassing all other teams. Furthermore, they showcased their dominance by defeating Chelsea once again in a thrilling penalty shootout to claim the FA Cup championship later in the same season.
