Jurgen Klopp suggests a surprising return to Liverpool in a revealing interview: ‘It’s possible’.
In a recent interview, Jurgen Klopp spoke nearly two years after he announced his intention to leave Liverpool following a nine-year tenure at Anfield.
Klopp referred to the possibility of a surprising return to Liverpool as ‘theoretically possible.’ The legendary former Reds manager has been serving as the Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull’s football division and has recently joined a group of experts assisting the German Football League (DFL) in enhancing the development of young players in the country.
In January 2024, Klopp shared in an emotional interview with the internal Liverpool media team that he would be departing at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. He left Anfield with an impressive record, having secured the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, and the Club World Cup.
Recently, during an interview, the German was asked if he would ever consider a return to Liverpool for a second term. His response indicated that the likelihood of him returning to the Anfield dugout in the Premier League was slim, yet he did not rule it out entirely.
While speaking on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Klopp responded to the question of a potential return by stating: ‘I said I would never coach a different team in England. So that means if I did return to England, then it’s Liverpool. Yeah, theoretically it’s possible.’
When inquired about what it would take for him to come back to Anfield, he stated: ‘I don’t even know exactly. I love what I do now. I don’t miss coaching. I don’t. I do coach but it’s just different; it’s not players.
‘I don’t miss it. I don’t miss standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours. I also don’t miss attending press conferences three times a week.
Having ten or twelve interviews each week is something I don’t miss at all. I truly don’t. I don’t miss being in the dressing room either. Having coached approximately 1,080 games, I spent a considerable amount of time in the dressing room.
“I don’t want to pass away in the dressing room. It’s thoughts like these that cross my mind. I’m 58 years old. While you might consider that old, from other viewpoints, it’s not particularly ancient.
“This implies that I could make a decision in a few years. I’m uncertain. Is it necessary for me to decide today? I will not return to coaching, but thankfully, I don’t have to rush into that; I can simply wait to see what the future holds.”
He then transitioned to discussing his position at Red Bull, stating: “Currently, I am engaged in a project that I genuinely enjoy, and I have a deep appreciation for the people I am collaborating with, the clubs we oversee, and the nations in which these clubs are located.
“I take pleasure in what I am doing at this moment. In my opinion, I can only excel at it if I dedicate myself fully, and that has always been my aspiration.”
Liverpool went on to secure the Premier League title under his successor, Arne Slot, one season after Klopp stepped down.
They are presently competing for the title, although they have lost significant momentum after defeats to Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United in their last three Premier League matches.
