Jurgen Klopp already ‘considering’ managerial U-turn amid Arne Slot pressure…
Jurgen Klopp is reportedly ‘considering’ a return to management amid pressure on Arne Slot.
His perspective on returning to coaching appears to be shifting following his emotional departure from Liverpool.
Reports suggest that Klopp is contemplating a comeback, especially as the current Liverpool manager, Arne Slot, faces mounting pressure.
The Reds experienced a disappointing 2-1 defeat against bottom-placed Wolves on Tuesday, intensifying the scrutiny on Slot. Liverpool risks failing to secure Champions League qualification, despite having invested approximately $600 million last summer.
Doubts linger regarding Slot’s suitability for the role, particularly after he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title last season. The Dutch manager will face increased pressure if his team suffers another loss to Wolves on Friday, as they are set to clash again in the FA Cup.
Should Slot be dismissed by the Reds, Klopp would likely be the frontrunner for an emotional return to Anfield. The German coach resigned from his managerial position at Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after nearly nine years, opting to take a break from coaching.
Since then, Klopp has transitioned into an executive role, becoming Red Bull’s head of global soccer at the start of 2025. However, a return to the sidelines could happen sooner than anticipated.
Regardless of Klopp’s potential return to Liverpool, Slot’s role at Anfield appears to be increasingly precarious. Liverpool risks falling out of the Premier League’s top five — the Champions League qualification spots — if Chelsea secures a victory against Aston Villa in Birmingham on Wednesday.
Slot’s squad still has an opportunity to claim both the FA Cup and the Champions League. They have advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will compete against Galatasaray, but they face a challenging path to the final.
Should they overcome Galatasaray, the Reds will encounter either Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea in the quarterfinals. To complicate matters further, one of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Atalanta, or Bayern Munich will be waiting in the semifinals.
Although Liverpool’s performance this season has been subpar, Slot’s tactical choices have also faced criticism. His decision not to start Rio Ngumoha, one of Liverpool’s most effective attacking players in recent weeks, is causing discontent among fans on Merseyside.
“He must start Ngumoha now,” Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard stated to TNT Sports following Tuesday’s match. “He needs to be in the starting lineup because he’s making a greater impact in a brief appearance than (Cody) Gakpo is in 65 or 70 minutes.”
Gerrard is optimistic that Ngumoha will be included in the starting lineup against Wolves in the FA Cup on Friday. Slot has some goodwill from his title victory last season, but he may need to secure a trophy and a top-five finish to preserve his position once Liverpool’s disappointing 2025-26 season concludes.
If Slot does not finish the season on a high note, and Klopp is interested in returning to management after a two-year hiatus, it would not be surprising to see the German back at Anfield.
