Gary Neville called Nicolas Jover, Arsenal’s set-piece mastermind, the “most frustrating character in football” after the Gunners secured a victory over his previous team, Manchester United, in the Premier League…

Gary Neville referred to Arsenal’s set-piece strategist Nicolas Jover as the “most irritating person in football” following the Gunners’ victory over his former team, Manchester United, in the Premier League.
After Arsenal triumphed over his old club Manchester United in the Premier League, Gary Neville labeled Nicolas Jover, the Gunners’ set-piece expert, as the “most bothersome individual in football.”
Arsenal showcased their exceptional set-piece capabilities once again, overpowering United with a 2-0 triumph, courtesy of goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba.
Despite Manchester United’s impressive 4-0 win against Everton in their previous match, which marked new manager Ruben Amorim’s first Premier League success, they struggled to contain Arsenal in the second half after a competitive first half.
This loss positions United in the lower half of the Premier League standings after 14 matches, while Arsenal narrows the gap to league leaders Liverpool to seven points.
Neville, who was watching the match live on The Overlap, directed his comments at Jover, who has played a crucial role in Arsenal’s achievements this season.
Arsenal has outperformed all other teams in the Premier League in terms of goals scored from corners this season.
Prior to the match against United, manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged Jover’s significant contribution to the team.
However, Neville remains unimpressed by Jover, stating: “The set-piece coach at Arsenal has to be the most annoying bloke in football. He really has to be, doesn’t he?”
After Arsenal capitalized on another corner, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher remarked on Jover’s influence: “Honestly, give him whatever he wants.
If you were the set-piece coach for Arsenal, you could dictate your own contract. You simply couldn’t let him go. If he demanded £25,000 a week, you’d have no choice but to comply.”
Arteta recruited the 43-year-old Jover from Manchester City shortly after taking the helm at Arsenal.
Reflecting on Jover’s impact earlier this week, Arteta stated: “He’s a very special person and someone who is very close to me.”
I took the initiative to support him at City because I recognized significant potential for enhancement in that area.
I reached out to him and proposed to Pep that he join us to provide assistance. Since that moment, our relationship has grown very close.
We have a shared vision regarding how to integrate all elements effectively, ensuring everything is interconnected and operates smoothly within our team.
Many individuals contribute considerable effort, thought, and time to this endeavor, but he undoubtedly plays a crucial role in our success.
Jover, a German-born French coach, has been referred to as a ‘genius’ by fellow set-piece analyst Mads Buttgereit.
“I have always been passionate about set-pieces, but at that time, I was just an ordinary coach in a conventional role,” he shared with Sky Sports. “After meeting him, I began to view myself more as a specialist in set-pieces.”
“Nicolas possesses a genius-level intellect in his approach and the way he formulates strategies. Engaging in discussions with him about various set-plays reveals that every detail is meticulously considered.”
“There are no random elements in any routine. Our conversations about set-pieces are never straightforward; we could easily spend over an hour dissecting a specific corner routine.”
“We analyze every detail and anticipate the opponent’s reactions. The level of detail is exceptional.”
Meanwhile, Arteta expressed his admiration for his Arsenal squad after their victory over Manchester United, capitalizing on Liverpool’s slight misstep in an exhilarating 3-3 draw with Newcastle United.
“I’m extremely pleased; it was a memorable evening in this remarkable stadium,” he stated to Amazon Prime.
“I believe we earned the win. We had to adjust the lineup due to several injuries, but the energy in the stadium was fantastic.”
“As we entered the second half, we made some tactical changes – the team performed brilliantly. We need every possible outcome to secure victories – let’s keep this momentum going.”
