Former Premier League referee explains why VAR made error in not awarding Liverpool penalty vs Man City after proper review of the incident…

A former Premier League official has clarified the reason behind VAR’s mistake in failing to award Liverpool a penalty in their match against Manchester City.

At Anfield on Sunday, during stoppage time with the score tied at 1-1, Jeremy Doku of Manchester City made a clumsy challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, seemingly catching him in the chest. However, to the disappointment of Liverpool, VAR dismissed the appeals after reviewing the replays.

Jurgen Klopp expressed his frustration with the decision, stating that it was a clear penalty for anyone involved in football. He emphasized that this type of situation, regardless of the position on the pitch, should always be considered a foul and warrant a yellow card.

Klopp further explained that although Doku made contact with the ball, it was only possible because his foot was in a position to do so. Without the presence of the ball, the challenge could have seriously injured Mac Allister. The Liverpool manager emphasized the simplicity of the situation, highlighting the potential danger involved.

Adding to the discussion, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has also shared his perspective on the matter.

The ball rebounds upwards. Alexis Mac Allister advances towards it. Jeremy Doku’s foot is raised. He strikes Mac Allister in the chest.

“If this had occurred outside of the penalty area, it would have undoubtedly resulted in a free-kick. Just because it happened inside the box does not suddenly make it a fair challenge, especially when Mac Allister might be left with visible marks on his chest on Monday morning.”

Clattenburg further commented, “Irrespective of the significance of the match and the fact that it occurred in the 98th minute, this incident deserved a penalty.”

“Referee Michael Oliver failed to notice it in real time at the end of a grueling and thrilling contest, leaving VAR Stuart Attwell to step in.”

“Everyone could see that this was a clear penalty for Liverpool, except for VAR, whose opinion holds the most weight in such crucial moments of matches.”

As a result of the draw, Liverpool now sits in second place behind Arsenal on goal difference. City remains one point behind in third position.

This season’s Premier League title race is shaping up to be one of the closest in recent memory.

Liverpool supporters were left in awe after witnessing Alexis Mac Allister’s actions just moments before he scored the equalizer for Liverpool against Manchester City.

The match between Liverpool and City ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw at Anfield, setting the stage for a nail-biting title race with Arsenal now in a strong position.

City took the lead in the first half with a cleverly executed corner kick by Kevin De Bruyne, resulting in John Stones finding the back of the net after Alexis Mac Allister created space with a blocked shot by Nathan Ake.

Jurgen Klopp’s team struggled in the first half, and City had several opportunities to increase their lead. One of the most notable chances was a one-on-one situation between Erling Haaland and Virgil Van Dijk, with the Norwegian managing to get past the defender and take a shot.

Despite Manchester City’s dominance in the first half, Jurgen Klopp’s halftime team talk must have been exceptional.

Liverpool started the second half with immense energy and completely controlled the game, leaving City bewildered.

Although Liverpool displayed their superiority, it was City’s mistake that resulted in the equalizer. A careless backpass from Nathan Ake forced Ederson into a hasty challenge on Darwin Nunez, resulting in a clear penalty.

With their regular penalty taker, Mo Salah, still on the bench, Mac Allister stepped up to take the spot kick after a lengthy delay. He expertly converted it into the top left corner.

After the game, spectators were quick to notice that the Argentine player had effortlessly been juggling the ball while waiting for his penalty kick. This display of skill left Liverpool fans in awe of Mac Allister’s composure.

One supporter expressed their desire to witness Alexis’s relaxed demeanor, as they themselves were far from calm during the wait.

Another fan pointed out that this player had previously taken a penalty in the World Cup final, implying that such situations were nothing new to him.

A third fan praised Mac Allister’s abilities, highlighting his exceptional ball control, decision-making skills, and proficiency from the penalty spot. They regarded him as the epitome of composure.

In fact, some fans were so impressed that they advocated for Salah to be relieved of penalty duties and replaced by the former Brighton midfielder.

“I had forgotten how exceptional Macca was at taking penalties during his time at Brighton. He remains calm, avoids unnecessary theatrics, and executes flawlessly. I believe he should take over penalty duties from Mo,” explained the fan.
