Cody Gakpo indicates his desire for a new role at Liverpool after setting a 47-year record for the Netherlands.

Following his record-setting performance for the Netherlands, Cody Gakpo has conveyed a clear message to Arne Slot.

The 26-year-old netted two goals and provided an assist during the 4-0 victory over Malta in the World Cup qualifier on Thursday night.

Gakpo had a disappointing performance in his previous Dutch appearance during the September international break, but his recent display contributed to maintaining his country’s unbeaten streak in Group G.

Since Luis Diaz’s transfer to Bayern Munich in the summer, he has become the primary choice on the left wing at Anfield, although Liverpool fans have occasionally criticized Gakpo this year.

Nevertheless, he is now focused on securing a significant role for the Reds and has hinted that he could be the ideal candidate for the position.

Cody Gakpo is eyeing penalty-taking responsibilities at Liverpool.

Gakpo made history as the first Netherlands player since Rob Rensenbrink in 1978 to convert two penalties in a single match.

In a post-match interview, as reported by Algemeen Dagblad, the Liverpool forward highlighted his nearly flawless penalty record throughout his career.

“I was given the opportunity to take the penalty because Memphis wasn’t on the field. There wasn’t a clear agreement on who would take it; it was left to me and Wout Weghorst.

“At Liverpool, I’m not usually allowed to take them. But generally, I’m quite proficient at it. I’ve only missed a penalty once, which was for PSV against FC Copenhagen.”

2 – Cody Gakpo is the first @OnsOranje player to score two penalties in a single match (excluding shootouts) since Rob Rensenbrink against Iran at the 1978 World Cup. Converted.

Mohamed Salah serves as the primary penalty taker at Anfield – the Egyptian successfully converted a vital penalty against Burnley earlier this season, securing a last-minute 1-0 victory at Turf Moor.

Nevertheless, he failed to convert what turned out to be a crucial penalty during the shootout defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield, just a week after sending a penalty over the crossbar in the final pre-season friendly.

Although it is unlikely that Gakpo will assume penalty-taking responsibilities over his Liverpool colleague, Salah has missed eight penalties in matches since joining Anfield, despite having scored 47.

Gakpo has emerged as a key player for Liverpool this season, and while Arne Slot might consider the Dutchman if Salah is unavailable to take a penalty, it is improbable that there will be any alteration in penalty-taking roles this year.

How does Cody Gakpo stack up against Mohamed Salah?

In fact, Gakpo boasts a marginally superior penalty conversion rate compared to Salah, although he has attempted 56 fewer penalties than his teammate.

Gakpo successfully converted one penalty for Liverpool during the 3-2 defeat against his former club PSV in the Champions League last season.

On the other hand, Salah has an impressive record from the penalty spot for the Reds, and while he does have the occasional miss, he seldom fails to score when it truly counts in significant matches.

Slot will be glad to see Gakpo assert his case for penalty-taking responsibilities. The manager has experienced defeats in both of his penalty shootouts against Palace and Paris Saint-Germain; hopefully, Gakpo can help change that narrative this season.
