One of Liverpool’s recent acquisitions has faced significant criticism from club legend Steven Gerrard, who labeled him as “the laziest signing in the club’s history.”
Gerrard expressed his disappointment regarding Arne Slot’s team selection: “If I had been afforded this type of opportunity while managing Liverpool, I could have led the club back to the Champions League.
However, Arne Slot is squandering potential by depending on a player who shows so little ambition.” Steven Gerrard pointed out that there remains a chance for Liverpool to loan the player out before the situation escalates further…
As poor as Konate: Slot must remove this “laughable” 3/10 Liverpool flop who lost possession 21 times – opinion
Slot needs to drop this 3/10 Liverpool flop who performed just as poorly as Konate against PSV
How the mighty have fallen at Liverpool.
Heading into this season, expectations for Arne Slot and his team would have been to achieve the challenging task of winning back-to-back Premier League titles, especially after investing in players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz over the summer.
However, the Reds now find themselves in a disheartening slump, having lost an astonishing nine out of their last 12 matches – leaving them stranded in mid-table in the top division – with a 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday night being the worst of a series of poor performances.
Not a single Liverpool supporter would leave the stadium after the disgraceful defeat at Anfield with any pride intact, as Ibrahima Konate’s error-prone season continued against the Dutch side.
Konate’s disastrous season persists
Liverpool is eager for January to arrive quickly, as they have been linked with Marc Guehi to address their defensive vulnerabilities.
Konate wasn’t the only shaky player in the Reds’ vulnerable defense against PSV, as Virgil van Dijk set the tone for the evening by conceding an early penalty due to a foolish handball.
In addition to disappointing Anfield with his lackluster performance, the inconsistent 26-year-old also failed to match the incisive play demonstrated by PSV, who consistently surged forward with speed. Gakpo relinquished possession 21 times while trying to create opportunities for his teammates.
While the defense faced the brunt of the criticism, Gakpo was not entirely spared from harsh feedback. Liverpool World’s Will Rooney assigned him a dismal 3/10 rating after the painful defeat, emphasizing that he must improve in various attacking situations to enhance his score.
Described as “laughable” in his ball control by a Reds content creator, Gakpo must now be concerned about potentially being relegated to the substitutes’ bench for the upcoming match against the Hammers, as Slot contemplates selection changes aimed at salvaging his position.
Journalist David Lynch has expressed doubt about Slot’s ability to “survive” his current situation, regardless of his next steps. However, it seems prudent to drop both Konate and Gakpo in an effort to redirect the faltering team back on track.
However, following a “nightmare” performance against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, as described by James Pearce of the Athletic, the Frenchman did not help his cause in winning back the favor of Anfield fans, delivering another uncertain display against Peter Bosz’s fortunate away team.
His struggles were epitomized when he failed to clear the ball during PSV’s dominant third goal in the one-sided match, which allowed second-half substitute Ricardo Pepi to surge forward and play a crucial role in the Eredivisie team’s game-sealing goal.
For Konate’s benefit, who has now been part of a “disgraceful” defense—an assessment made by Reds-based content creator DAVEOCKOP—over Liverpool’s last three matches, in which they conceded ten goals, Slot should consider leaving him out for the upcoming away fixture against West Ham United.
Yet, concerningly, Konate was not the worst player on a night that will be remembered in Anfield’s history for all the wrong reasons. In fact, another underperformer is likely to face the consequences for their crucial match at the London Stadium.
Not just Konate: Liverpool star faces the chop
Indeed, while it ultimately had little significance at the final whistle, Konate would at least finish the match with only one misplaced pass recorded and three ground duels won.
Regrettably for the beleaguered number five, his disastrous moment leading to PSV’s third goal will overshadow everything else, with Cody Gakpo also receiving considerable criticism after the match, as his goal drought continues.
The Dutchman has now gone six games in November without scoring or assisting, but things could have been different against PSV, as Gakpo missed a significant chance against his former club when the score was still 2-1.
