Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool has finalized a six-year agreement for their upcoming signing, with a medical update provided.

Liverpool is nearing the completion of their next summer acquisition as the club prepares for the defense of their Premier League title.

New signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong made their debuts with goals, while Florian Wirtz demonstrated his potential, underscoring the reason Liverpool broke their transfer record to secure him.

The match concluded in a 2-2 draw, with the FA Cup holders triumphing in the penalty shootout.

The club’s Premier League title defense kicks off against Bournemouth on Friday night at Anfield, marking the beginning of the 2025-26 top-flight season for both the Cherries and the Reds. Liverpool clinched the league title in Slot’s inaugural year at the club and now aims to defend it—a feat they haven’t accomplished since the 1980s.

As the season commences, the transfer window remains open for just over two weeks. An agreement has been reached to acquire Giovanni Leoni from Serie A club Parma, but additional signings may be forthcoming if the club can finalize deals for Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak.

Fabrizio Romano provides an update on Giovanni Leoni’s transfer.

In his latest report regarding Leoni’s transfer to Anfield, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano disclosed that the player has signed a six-year contract on Merseyside and has completed the primary portion of his medical examination at the club.

In recent years, Liverpool has typically offered five-year contracts to new signings, but they have opted for a longer term with Leoni, granting him an additional 12 months. This approach was also taken with Ekitike, while other newcomers have only signed contracts for five years.

Romano stated on X: “Giovanni Leoni has completed the main part of his medical and has signed his contract as a new Liverpool player!”

“An exclusive detail to add: the contract will be valid until June 2031, marking a six-year deal with Liverpool. An official announcement is expected this week.”

Leoni attracted interest from multiple Serie A clubs, and other reports indicated that Premier League competitors Manchester United and Newcastle United made late attempts to sign the defender.

Arne Slot talks about Liverpool’s transfer activities

When asked by Sky Sports regarding the club’s transfer dealings, Slot expressed his desire to acquire at least one more forward. He stated: “I primarily view Hugo as a number nine who can also operate from the left or collaborate with another number nine.

“It’s evident that with Darwin and Luis Diaz both departed, and considering last season, we had five or six options available. I think it’s important to mention Diogo as well.

“So yes, we definitely need at least one more attacker.”

Regarding Leoni, Slot confirmed that an agreement had been reached between the Reds and Parma, but he declined to comment on the rumors surrounding Palace defender Marc Guehi, whose personal terms were reportedly settled earlier this week.

Slot remarked: “He is not part of our squad. Unfortunately, he was the captain of the team that defeated us last Sunday. If you wish to discuss him, you should approach Palace and [manager Oliver] Glasner for more information.”
