Arsenal Transfer Update: Concerns Over Gabriel Jesus, Hopes for Viktor Gyokeres, and Mikel Merino’s Done deal

As we approach the final week of the 2024 summer transfer window, discussions surrounding potential transfers at Arsenal are intensifying.

A £34 million deal for Mikel Merino, the Real Sociedad midfielder, is nearing completion, with only minor details remaining. He has been a key target for Mikel Arteta this summer, and it appears Arsenal is on the verge of securing his signature.

The Gunners remain linked with various players as the transfer deadline approaches on Friday. One of the latest names mentioned is Ademola Lookman, with reports from Italy indicating that Arsenal may propose a swap deal.

However, it seems that Lookman is likely to join Paris Saint-Germain instead.

As the window draws to a close, attention will also be focused on potential departures. Kiwior is among those who exit, while Eddie Nketiah appears to be nearing a transfer to Nottingham Forest.

Prior to Arsenal’s match against Aston Villa on Saturday, the fan community was already shaken by the announcement of another injury to Gabriel Jesus.

Throughout his initial two seasons with Arsenal, Jesus has faced significant time on the sidelines, which has sparked discussions about Mikel Arteta’s need to find a new striker.

Thankfully, Kai Havertz has been performing admirably in the forward position, yet he cannot shoulder the entire burden alone.

Eddie Nketiah is on the verge of departing from Arsenal, but in light of Jesus’ injury, there are indications that this transfer may be postponed until the club’s medical staff can fully evaluate the situation.

Jesus sustained a groin injury prior to the match against Villa, preventing him from joining the squad for their impressive 2-0 victory.

It would seem counterintuitive for Arsenal to hold off on selling Nketiah due to Jesus’ injury, especially since the club has been actively seeking a buyer in recent months.

Fortunately, an update from The Athletic suggests that Nketiah’s transfer should still proceed as planned. Reports indicate that Jesus’ injury is not severe, and he is expected to be sidelined for only a brief period.

Arteta announced on Saturday that Jesus would undergo an MRI scan to assess the extent of his groin injury.

However, initial assessments suggest that the Brazilian’s condition is not serious, and he may return after the upcoming international break.

Arsenal will face Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates before that, a match in which Havertz can once again take the lead. Nevertheless, some may argue that allowing Nketiah to leave this month could be risky if the club fails to secure a replacement before the transfer window closes.

If Arsenal does not sign a striker and Jesus suffers another injury or if his condition deteriorates, Arteta’s title ambitions could be jeopardized.

While Jesus returned in excellent form for Arsenal’s pre-season, it is becoming increasingly fair to label the striker as ‘injury prone’ at this point.
