Arsenal player ratings against Aston Villa reveal a 4/10 performance in a heartbreaking defeat, with Rice earning 7.5 and Saka receiving a 7 | Arsenal Players Evaluated in Difficult Loss to Aston Villa
Arsenal’s efforts were shattered in the dying moments of the match as Aston Villa netted a winner in the 94th minute through Emi Buendia. The Gunners endured a disastrous first half, which ultimately cost them the game.
Eberechi Eze opened the scoring early, but Bukayo Saka’s run preceding his cross was deemed too early, leading to an offside call. Matty Cash struck first with a low shot after weak defending allowed the ball to reach him at the back post.
Mikel Arteta implemented key changes at halftime, and the effect was immediate as Leandro Trossard scored following a deflected shot from Saka. Arsenal then had to withstand a barrage of chances, ultimately succumbing to a late goal from Emi Buendia.
Below are the ratings for the Arsenal players as assessed by football.london:
David Raya – Made a crucial save early in the game against Ollie Watkins after the striker had outpaced both centre-backs. He was beaten by Matty Cash’s low shot that went through his legs.
In the second half, he made a significant save after the equalizer, with Ollie Watkins’ left foot finding the diving Spaniard. Ultimately, he had little chance as he was left scrambling before the ball fell to Buendia. 8
Ben White – Should have tested Emi Martinez more with a first-time shot set up by Bukayo Saka. He was a consistent presence on the right, supporting Saka, and could have converted a couple of his created chances into goals. 7
Jurrien Timber – His flicked header led to Cash at the back post. There was a noticeable aggressiveness in the back four’s structure, with the Dutchman covering significant ground. 7
Piero Hincapie – Experienced some chaotic moments but displayed the necessary aggressiveness and improved as the game progressed. However, the absence of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and now Cristhian Mosquera was clearly felt.
However, at the time of the death, it was a poor touch that he observed go out of play at the conclusion, resulting in a throw-in that led to that late winning goal. 6
Riccardo Calafiori – He made some outstanding interceptions and tackles in the early phases to disrupt several Villa attacks. This performance continued throughout the match, and although the Italian is typically recognized for his offensive runs, he significantly impressed defensively in this instance.
There was one moment of near-craziness when a bad touch at the back could have allowed Donyell Malen to score, but the Dutchman shot wide. 8
Martin Zubimendi – His ability to win aerial duels despite his height was evident in this match; he contested every ball fiercely. 7
Declan Rice – He executed a superb block to stop Matty Cash from scoring in the first half. He also did excellent work to regain possession from Amadou Onana during the build-up to the equalizer. 7
Martin Odegaard – He had a shot from outside the box saved by Emi Martinez in the early moments. He provided the pass to Saka after advancing forward in the build-up to the first Arsenal goal.
He saw another long-range attempt tipped over by Emi Martinez. 7
Bukayo Saka – He had a chance from outside the box that was well saved by Martinez. He did well to create an opportunity for Ben White by getting behind his defender. He managed to break through again and took a shot that deflected to Trossard, who scored without hesitation.
After a corner, the ball came to Saka in the box, and he attempted to place it, but Kamara intervened with a block. 7
Mikel Merino – He failed to deliver the pass to Bukayo Saka at a crucial moment in the first half, overhitting it and losing the opportunity. He was substituted at halftime after a rather ineffective performance. 5
Eberechi Eze – He believed he had scored in the first half, but Saka was offside in the build-up. He was largely absent in the first half and was not present at the back post for Cash’s goal, leading to his substitution at halftime. 4
Substitutes:
Leandro Trossard – Made an immediate impact after entering the game, with a notable volley that went wide of the right post from the left side. However, he soon found the back of the net after a rebound from Saka’s shot. 8
Viktor Gyokeres – Brought the much-needed energy and width for the Gunners in the second half. Nevertheless, he had very few opportunities to capitalize on. 6
Noni Madueke – Came on to replace Bukayo Saka, who had received a booking and was at risk of a second yellow. He struggled to find any chances after his introduction. 5
Gabriel Martinelli – Took over from Trossard, who had just returned from injury and was clearly fatigued despite his brief appearance. n/a
Myles Lewis-Skelly – Stepped in for the suspended Riccardo Calafiori, who had accumulated his fifth yellow card. n/a
