Arsenal 3-2 Newcastle United: Dowman shines as the Gunners secure victory in Singapore.
Arsenal player ratings against Newcastle: Mikel Merino excels while Max Dowman impresses again.
The 15-year-old prodigy delivers another dazzling performance, proving too much for the opposition as Arsenal triumphs over Newcastle in a thrilling five-goal match.
Arsenal achieved their second pre-season win with a 3-2 result against Newcastle in Singapore.
Anthony Elanga initiated the scoring with a misdirected shot that ricocheted off the post and past David Raya.
Arsenal then flipped the match around, netting two goals within two minutes from Mikel Merino and an own goal by Alex Murphy.
Despite Arsenal’s control, Newcastle managed to claw their way back into the match when Jacob Murphy found the bottom corner from distance.
Arsenal ultimately secured the winning goal their performance warranted when Martin Odegaard converted a penalty after the dynamic 15-year-old Max Dowman was fouled by Joelinton.
Sam Tabuteau was present to evaluate the Arsenal players…
David Raya 5
Even Elanga was unsure of the direction of his shot, leaving Raya with little chance on Newcastle’s first goal. He faced challenges with his distribution as Newcastle’s pressing created issues for Arsenal during the build-up. He got a hand to Jacob Murphy’s equalizer and will feel he could have performed better.
Ben White 6
White has had a solid start to pre-season, taking advantage of Jurrien Timber’s absence with a couple of strong displays. He is gradually regaining his confidence.
William Saliba 6
After a shaky beginning, he recovered well to assist Arsenal in dominating possession.
Riccardo Calafiori 6
The Italian defender suffered another injury, leading to his early substitution in the second half. Staying healthy will be a significant challenge for Calafiori this season.
Myles Lewis-Skelly 5
This was not his finest performance. He surrendered several passes, and his crossing continued to disappoint in promising situations.
Martin Zubimendi 7
Always present in the game and consistently an option. He was quick to react to loose balls, drawing fouls and recycling possession to help Arsenal advance.
Mikel Merino 8
He brought Arsenal back into contention with a composed finish from the edge of the box. His tenacity in regaining possession was crucial for Arsenal’s equalizer, and he collaborated effectively with Zubimendi.
Ethan Nwaneri 5
He didn’t contribute sufficiently in his preferred central position and was substituted at half-time.
Bukayo Saka 6
As the Arsenal captain in Odegaard’s absence, this was not one of Saka’s most impressive performances. Just before Newcastle’s equalizer, he almost scored with a daring overhead kick.
Leandro Trossard 6
He attempted to create opportunities, but not much came to fruition for him.
Kai Havertz 7
He was a constant nuisance without scoring and played a role in both of Arsenal’s first-half goals. Viktor Gyokeres, who was present at the National Stadium, likely won’t be too concerned.
Jakub Kiwior 6
He replaced Calafiori and was responsible for maintaining ball movement as Arsenal sought to construct attacks.
Martin Odegaard 7
He converted a penalty to regain Arsenal’s lead. He will be looking forward to partnering with Gyokeres next season.
Kepa Arrizabalaga 6
He had little to do as Arsenal controlled possession, but made a good save late in the game from Harrison Ashby.
Gabriel Martinelli 5
A significant season lies ahead for the Brazilian winger, who now faces competition for his spot.
Max Dowman 8
The 15-year-old showed no signs of intimidation. He quickly got onto the pitch and into the action, attempting to maneuver past Joelinton. His performance included Cruyff turns, intricate runs, and a sense of complete confidence. He had Joelinton figured out from the moment he entered the field, drawing a foul from the Brazilian that led to a late penalty for Arsenal.
Andre Harriman-Annous 6
The 17-year-old striker has had a remarkable first year at Arsenal, with his participation in the first team’s pre-season tour being a testament to his growth.
Declan Rice 6
Assisted Arsenal in maintaining their lead while they sought the winning goal that their performance warranted.
Christian Norgaard 6
Norgaard will need to adapt to this role frequently next season, coming on to solidify games in the closing stages.
Oleksandr Zinchenko 6
Zinchenko appears poised to fulfill his Arsenal contract, which is set to expire next summer, following discussions with Arteta. The Ukrainian’s adaptability and experience render him a valuable asset.
Marli Salmon 6
The other 15-year-old participant in Arsenal’s pre-season training camp. Salmon, similar to Dowman, is held in high regard by Arteta.
Josh Nichols 6
Arteta has demonstrated considerable trust in youth this summer, with right-back Nichols being one of eight academy players who have joined the first team on their trip to Asia.
