Arsenal is targeting a dream winger known for being a “serial winner” and a better dribbler than Saka…
Arsenal Pursuing Ambitious Winger Known for Winning and Superior Dribbling Skills Compared to Saka – Analysis
No European player has demonstrated greater dribbling ability than this exceptionally skilled winger.
Arsenal’s aspirations for the title faced another challenge on Saturday evening, as they were held to a 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.
For the first time since Kai Havertz joined the club, Mikel Arteta’s squad entered a Premier League match without Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, or Havertz, three of last season’s top four scorers.
This absence was evident, as the Gunners struggled to create significant attacking opportunities.
Last season, Arsenal netted 91 goals in the Premier League, marking their highest tally in a single league campaign since their title-winning season of 1952/53.
They also made history by becoming the first team in the English top flight to score five or more goals in six different away league matches within a calendar year in 2024, breaking the previous records held by Sunderland in 1892 and Manchester City in 1937.
However, this season, the Gunners have managed to score either zero or one goal in nine out of their 20 league matches.
In contrast, league leaders Liverpool have only experienced this twice, highlighting the urgent need for attacking reinforcements in January, especially with Saka expected to be out for “more than two months.”
Arsenal Targeting Bundesliga Winger
With Saka sidelined and Ethan Nwaneri—who scored against Brighton last Saturday—also facing a muscular injury, the need for new signings this winter is pressing.
According to a report by Connor Humm for Football Insider, Arsenal is keen on acquiring Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman.
Currently valued at £28 million by Football Transfers, the French winger is contracted with Bayern until June 2027.
Kingsley Coman’s comparison to Bukayo Saka highlights some intriguing aspects of their playing styles.
European football analyst Zach Lowy has dubbed Coman a “serial winner,” noting that he has secured league titles in each of his first 11 professional seasons—two with Paris Saint-Germain, one with Juventus, and eight with Bayern Munich.
This pedigree could potentially aid Arsenal in their quest for success.
Currently, no player has claimed titles in all four of Europe’s “big five” leagues, a statistic that Arsenal supporters hope will change if Coman joins the team in North London this month.
Any winger Arsenal acquires during the January transfer window will face the challenge of matching Saka’s contributions, a tall order for any player.
However, a comparison reveals that while Saka significantly outperforms Coman in terms of goal involvements, there are similarities in their skill sets.
FBRef’s ‘similar players’ feature indicates that Saka is among the most comparable players to Coman in Europe’s elite leagues.
Since August 2022, Saka has logged double the minutes of Coman, resulting in higher totals for both goals and assists, along with an impressive goals minus expected goals (xG) figure of +9.2.
While it is unlikely that Arsenal will find a player as talented as Saka in January, Coman’s statistics suggest he could still be a valuable addition.
The French winger has successfully completed nearly half of his attempted dribbles, a stark contrast to Gabriel Martinelli, who has faced criticism for his recent performances.
Coman’s exceptional dribbling skills, which include a higher rate of progressive carries per 90 minutes than Saka, could provide Arsenal’s attack with a new dynamic.
He has demonstrated remarkable scoring ability, netting four goals this season in only 885 minutes of play for Bayern.
Although Coman may not be Arteta’s ideal long-term solution, he could prove to be a valuable addition this month.
