Arsenal can get Viktor Gyokeres firing by signing “unstoppable” £100m PL “machine”…
Arsenal can ignite Viktor Gyokeres’ performance by acquiring the “unstoppable” £100m Premier League “machine”.
This summer has been quite eventful for Arsenal thus far.
Off the field, developments have unfolded as positively as supporters could hope, with Jurrien Timber and Gabriel Magalhães returning from injuries and Andrea Berta making several remarkable signings.
For instance, the signings of Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, and Cristhian Mosquera have significantly enhanced the depth of Mikel Arteta’s squad, while Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres could prove to be game-changers in the starting eleven.
Nevertheless, following two consecutive losses, the on-field performance has been less promising, particularly in the match against Villarreal, where the team struggled to maximize the potential of the Swedish striker.
Fortunately, the club has the opportunity to address this issue by revisiting their interest in a Premier League star they had previously been linked with earlier in the transfer window, someone who could immediately get Gyokeres scoring.
Arsenal must optimize Gyokeres’ contributions.
It’s clear why Arsenal opted to invest approximately £63.5m in Gyokeres this summer, as last season they netted 17 goals fewer than Liverpool in the league, and the former Sporting CP talent is a prolific goalscoring machine.
For example, in just 52 matches for the Portuguese club last season, accumulating 4248 minutes, the Stockholm-born “powerhouse,” as described by analyst Ben Mattinson, scored an impressive 54 goals and provided 13 assists as well.
This means the 27-year-old star averaged 1.28 goal involvements per game, or one every 63.40 minutes, which is nothing short of extraordinary.
However, while he wasn’t particularly poor against Villarreal last night, fans were unable to witness him score, nor did he appear especially threatening.
That said, we wouldn’t hold that against him, as he managed to keep his only shot on target, succeeded in 100% of his dribbles, and was not noted for missing any significant chances.
The issue primarily stemmed from his teammates, as neither Ethan Nwaneri nor Martin Odegaard managed to create a significant opportunity for him from the midfield, with only two chances generated by the rest of the team.
In summary, Arteta requires his team to generate more opportunities for Gyokeres. While this may occur throughout the season, the club could enhance their chances by signing a player they have been linked with this summer: Morgan Rogers.
How Rogers could ignite Gyokeres
Indeed, although he may not currently be heavily associated with Arsenal, Rogers was mentioned as a potential transfer to the Emirates multiple times earlier this summer.
Although securing this transfer could prove to be complex and costly—some reports estimate his value at £100m—it is a pursuit worth undertaking, not only for the Englishman’s talent but also for the positive influence he could have on Gyokeres.
The primary and most significant reason he could help the Swede excel is due to his remarkable performance metrics.
For instance, in 54 matches last season, accumulating 4496 minutes, the Halesowen-born “machine,” as referred to by The Athletic’s Jacob, scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists.
This indicates that the frequently described “unstoppable” 23-year-old, as noted by former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher, achieved a goal involvement every 1.86 games, or every 155.03 minutes, which is an exceptionally impressive statistic, especially considering he faced teams like Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, and Juventus in the Champions League.
Now, envision how incredibly effective the former Sporting striker could be next season, playing in front of or alongside a player as formidable as the Villa star.
Additionally, FBref placed the England international in the top 3% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League last season for long pass completion and in the top 7% for through balls per 90 minutes.
These metrics hold significant importance and indicate that he would be an exceptionally valuable teammate for the former Coventry City star.
The prolific goalscorer primarily operates in and around the penalty area, taking nearly all of his shots from that location, which necessitates that his teammates provide him with the ball.
In the end, executing this transfer would be costly and ambitious, but given his talent and the potential influence he could have on Gyokeres, Arsenal should make every effort to secure Rogers this summer.
