Arne Slot provides a concerning update on Liverpool’s injuries and discusses whether he will implement a new formation against West Ham.

As Liverpool prepares to face West Ham United, Arne Slot’s position as head coach is under scrutiny.

Slot has dismissed the possibility of altering Liverpool’s formation for the match against West Ham United, citing a shortage of defenders.

The Reds will visit West Ham United on Sunday with their head coach facing pressure.

A dismal streak of nine losses in 12 matches across all competitions has left the Premier League champions trailing leaders Arsenal by 11 points. In their last three games, Liverpool has conceded 10 goals while managing to score only once.

This poor run of form has led some fans to believe that Slot needs to adjust his team, either in terms of tactics or player selection.

Some have proposed that a wing-back formation might be beneficial. However, Slot has stated that this is not feasible due to a lack of defenders available for the West Ham match, with both recognized right-backs, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, sidelined by injury.

Giovanni Leoni is out for the season after tearing his ACL, and Joe Gomez received a knee injection last week.

Additionally, Ibrahima Konate was absent from training prior to the disappointing 4-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

What has been said

“Is the question: ‘Should I change dramatically?'” Slot inquired, as reported by the Guardian. “I’m not sure what you’re thinking, but if you want to switch to a system with five defenders, that could pose a problem. I don’t even have five defenders available.

“The current system we are using is the best fit for the players. They have likely played this way for most of their careers, and we have very limited training time.

Therefore, it is nearly impossible to completely alter our football philosophy when we are playing every two days.

I believe we have utilized a variety of lineups for reasons I would rather not discuss, as not everyone has been available. We have consistently relied on our entire squad.

‘We possess the quality’

Liverpool’s recent performance is not unusual for a Premier League champion. Last season, Manchester City experienced a decline in form, winning only once in 13 matches.

They managed to secure a third-place finish in the standings and have begun to recover this season. Slot believes that the Reds’ squad has the same caliber to reverse their fortunes.

“I have already mentioned several reasons, and I could provide an additional five or six for why we are experiencing this run of form, but they will never suffice to compensate for the results we have,” Slot stated. “I’m not certain, but Pep [Guardiola] would likely echo similar sentiments.

For instance, we faced injuries last season too. So it’s not as if this season we are dealing with injuries while last season we weren’t, which contributed to a better run of form.

“However, the example of City is indeed relevant because they possess quality, and we possess quality.

The best way to emerge from a situation like this is for us as a team, and for me as a manager, to maximize the potential of these players once more to return to winning ways.

If we lacked quality, we would be facing a significant issue. I believe we have the quality, and we must once again bring out the best in them.
