Liverpool fans start pushing a petition to ban Chris Kavanagh from refereeing their matches after Man City loss

Liverpool were at the receiving end of some really dubious officiating in their 3-0 loss to Man City in the 2026/27 Premier League clash at Anfield.

The game totally changed up after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, following his second yellow card after the hour-mark. Gravenberch’s second yellow card itself was quite soft, but replays for his first booking showed that he barely even touched Elliot Anderson – who feinted acting to cause the referee to book the Dutchman.

Referee Chris Kavanagh’s actions in the game against Man City has infuriated many Liverpool supporters, who do not want to see him officiate their matches at all.

Kavanagh, for those unknowing, hails from Manchester and that has sparked the speculation that he is biased against Liverpool. After the Reds’ recent loss to Man City, many fans are infuriated about Kavanagh and one fan decided to do something about it.

One Liverpool supporter decided to create an online petition, urging the Premier League hierarchy to ensure that Chris Kavanagh cannot officiate another one of their matches anymore in the future.

The supporter wrote in the petition: “Every time Chris Kavanagh referees a Liverpool match, I find myself filled with rage and frustration. Sports are meant to be a source of joy and community, but each game he referees turns a celebration into a source of distress. Numerous instances of questionable officiating have been noted, and the anger is palpable within the fan community. It’s not just subjective frustration; evidence from game replays often highlight these issues, with analysts and fans alike pointing out the inconsistencies.

“The English Premier League prides itself on its dedication to fair play and maintaining high officiating standards. To uphold this standard, it’s crucial to take action when a clear pattern of problematic refereeing appears to negatively impact the sport.

“I call upon the Premier League and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to consider the evidence and reassess Chris Kavanagh’s suitability for officiating Liverpool matches. By doing so, not only do we restore fairness in the game, but we also protect fans like myself from the emotional distress that inconsistency in officiating can cause.

“Please join me in signing this petition to make the beautiful game fair and enjoyable for everyone. Let’s ensure every fan can watch their beloved team play without undue distress.”

The petition needed 100 signatures, but has ended up getting well over 100 signatures already as fans try their best to ensure Kavanagh can’t ruin their matches anymore.
