Man City to face legal action from Premier

Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges, with huge potential punishments in the pipeline.

Manchester City are set to face legal action from Premier League clubs, who could all join together in a class action after the 115 charges verdict.

After a long process which dates back to the initial charges in February 2023, a verdict finally emerged on Friday – with David Ornstein of The Athletic reporting that City had been found guilty of 114 out of the 115 charges by an independent commission.

No sanctions have been decided but all possible punishments are believed to be on the table.

City are expected to appeal the decision but in a new update from The Athletic, it’s revealed that legal action could follow from clubs in the English top flight.

The report claims that a number of clubs had conversations with leading lawyers about the issue a while back and there is dialogue between teams.

Clubs have been told by legal firms that they would be eligible for compensation in the event City are found guilty and according to the report, they could seek damages as one as talks intensify

The development comes after an independent commission set precedent by ruling that Everton must pay Burnley £35.1 million following their breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the 2021/22 campaign.

Clubs who didn’t qualify for the Champions League could argue they lost out on significant revenue because of City.

Legal action cannot commence until the appeals process has played out, though punishment can be applied in the meantime.

City’s charges relate to a nine-year period between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 campaigns, where they won three Premier League titles.

Responding to the news, a city spokesperson told The Athletic: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such, Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.

“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

City have not posted any response to the charges on their official website and social media channels, instead sharing a compilation of playmaker Rayan Cherki.

In July when he was appointed as the successor to Pep Guardiola, Maresca said he had “no concerns” regarding the charges.

He has had a perfect start to life as City boss, winning seven games out of seven in all competitions.

The charges news came during the international break, meaning the Italian will not answer questions in a press conference until 9 October before a clash with Liverpool at Anfield.

He has, however, posted a rather unusual bit of content on his social media.

On Instagram, Maresca posted a ‘dump’, with the caption, “Time to breathe. Time to analyse. Time to learn.”

The first image saw him walking on grass on his bare feet, much to the confusion of many.
