The Staggering Amount of Money Man City’s Premier League Rivals Could Now Sue For

Following the big footballing news today that Manchester City had been found guilty of ‘virtually all’ of their 115 charges relating to breaching the Premier League’s financial fair play rules, many clubs and players will be eagerly awaiting any punishments the Blues may face.

Whilst neither Manchester City nor the Premier League have responded to the reports today, with City refusing to comment on whether they had been informed of a decision yet, potential punishments have been circulating, with sanctions ranging from future points deductions, relegation to the lower tiers, or being stripped of their titles won during the years the charges relate to.

Any punishments will be some way off, however, considering City will most likely want to appeal any sanctions imposed against them, although their efforts will likely be unsuccessful, considering the number of charges they face.

Rivals Demand Compensation From City

Many of the charges City face range across nine years, stemming from 2009 through to 2018, although some were given to them in 2023, such as failing to co-operate with the investigation. During those nine years, City were one of the most successful clubs in England, lifting the Premier League trophy multiple times, alongside the League Cup and FA Cup.

With them years now in doubt, many clubs have been quick to demand they be compensated for the titles they could have won if it wasn’t for City breaking the rules, as well as some claiming they lost revenue due to missing out on Champions League football.

According to the Times, each rival club could demand more than £100 million in compensation. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Tottenham served notices on City in 2024, reserving the right to seek compensation if the club were found guilty of serious charges.

As per Adam Crafton from The Athletic, Manchester United have not wasted any time in seeking compensation from their rivals on the other side of town. The Red Devils have conducted internal assessments of the possible financial losses incurred during the period in which City have been found guilty of their rule breaches. For United, they could have won multiple Premier League titles, as well as qualifying for the Champions League after losing out to City on goal difference, which they argue denied them millions of pounds in revenue.

David Ornstein has also said that multiple Premier League clubs are planning legal action following the guilty verdict. Lawyers have reportedly been instructed and work has been underway for some time before the outcome was announced, although any action will have to wait until the appeal process has been carried out.

Any financial losses for Manchester City could also lead to a huge amount of job losses across the club, as staff worry cost-cutting measures could potentially see many lose their jobs.
