Liverpool have already agreed personal terms with Jarell

Jarell Quansah currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga after being sold by Liverpool F.C. in July 2025. The 23-year-old academy graduate moved to Germany in a deal worth up to £35 million to secure consistent starting minutes, which successfully propelled him into Thomas Tuchel’s England national team setup.

The Buy-Back Details & Future Return

Liverpool intentionally structured his departure to function almost like a multi-year loan by inserting a specific buy-back clause into his Leverkusen contract.

The 2026 Decision: Liverpool held an option to re-sign Quansah for €80 million (£70m). Despite facing a defensive injury crisis, the club ultimately opted against activating it, prioritizing other temporary defensive targets instead.

The 2027 Activation: According to reports from the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool’s buy-back option decreases to £55 million (€60m) in the summer of 2027. Quansah has reportedly already agreed to personal terms on an advance contract with Liverpool to make a potential 2027 move seamless. [1]

The club is heavily tipped to activate the clause in 2027 as a long-term succession plan, which aligns perfectly with the expiration of Virgil van Dijk’s contract. [1, 2]

Recent Transfer Interest

Because of his breakout performances in Germany—where he made 44 appearances and scored 5 goals last season—other Premier League giants have circled the defender. Arsenal submitted a verbal package worth €65 million including bonuses, which Bayer Leverkusen promptly rejected, reiterating that Quansah is not for sale. Manchester United also briefly registered active interest, but Liverpool continues to maintain first refusal rights alongside their pre-set 2027 buy-back option.
