Newcastle United’s potential free agent acquisitions
The strategic free transfer that could enhance Newcastle
There are numerous free agents available following the conclusion of the 2026/27 season, raising the question of whether Newcastle United should target any of them.
Sancho, Pogba, Wijnaldum among the leading free agents
These athletes have contracts that lapsed this summer, featuring several prominent names.
According to the Mirror, Newcastle aims to recruit four players from Manchester United, including Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly, Jesse Lingard, and Donny van de Beek.
Newcastle has opted for ‘young players with potential for development’
Former Newcastle defender John Anderson believes the
I raised an eyebrow upon seeing Wolves. I questioned their roster and wondered if he would receive significant playing time there. Is he expected to step directly into their starting lineup? Given their current performance, it seems unlikely.
“Joining a Championship club aiming to return to the Premier League at the first opportunity, we will see how it unfolds.
“I believe he had other alternatives if he chose to pursue that path and could explore different options. If this is his preferred destination, I wish him the best. Will he receive ample playing time? Time will tell.
The summer transfer window has closed, yet numerous talented players remain without a club and are available for free.
BBC Sport examines some of the most notable stars currently out of contract and available for signing.
Paul Pogba, 33 (Last club: Monaco)
The former Manchester United midfielder Pogba has seen limited action since his 18-month doping suspension concluded in March 2025. The Frenchman made only six appearances for Monaco after his transfer last summer, and following a series of injuries, the French club terminated his contract last month, a year ahead of its expiration.
Karim Benzema, 38 (Last club: Al Hilal)
The French striker Benzema has been playing in Saudi Arabia since departing Real Madrid in 2023, spending three years with Al Ittihad. However, just six months after joining Al-Hilal, the Ballon d’Or winner has had his contract terminated. The addition of attacking players Crysencio Summerville, Ollie Watkins, and Gabriel Martinelli may have contributed to Benzema’s exit, and despite making three appearances for Al-Hilal this season, his contract was ended on 31 August.
Riyad Mahrez, 35 (Last club: Al Ahli)
Another player whose contract was terminated in the Saudi Pro League is five-time Premier League champion Mahrez. The Algerian winger transferred to Al Ahli from Manchester City in 2023, netting 37 goals in 122 appearances across all competitions.
Reports indicate he is likely to remain in the Saudi league and is nearing a move to Al-Shabab.

Raheem Sterling, 31 (Last club: Feyenoord)
Sterling was let go by Feyenoord after a brief stint of just three months and eight appearances. He is scheduled to appear in court next month to address charges of dangerous driving stemming from a car crash into motorway barriers in May. Sources informed BBC Sport that the former Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea winger has endured “an extremely tough couple of years.”
Philippe Coutinho, 34 (Last club: Vasco da Gama)
The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder Coutinho departed his childhood club Vasco de Gama in February, citing mental fatigue. The Brazilian has yet to officially declare his retirement and has been previously rumored to be considering a move to MLS.
Jadon Sancho, 26 (Last club: Manchester United)
Sancho’s journey has been tumultuous since his transfer to United from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021. He has spent the last two and a half years on loan at various clubs, most recently at Aston Villa after a disappointing spell at Chelsea. Sancho made only 30 Premier League appearances for United but has reportedly agreed to join Brazilian club Palmeiras.
Dani Carvajal, 34 (Last club: Real Madrid)
Regarded as one of the finest right-backs of his era, Carvajal has been a free agent since his contract with Real Madrid expired in June. Over 13 years, he made 451 appearances in all competitions for Real and has not yet been associated with a new club. He has been training at the facilities of the Spanish Football Federation this summer alongside compatriot and fellow free agent Joselu.
Jamie Vardy, 39 (Last club: Cremonese)
Vardy spent the previous season with Cremonese after a lengthy 13-year tenure at Leicester City, but the team’s relegation to Serie B led to his departure. He has been strongly linked to a return to the English Football League, with Wrexham, Sheffield Wednesday, and West Ham reportedly showing interest.
David Alaba, 34 (Last club: Real Madrid)
The seasoned full-back Alaba departed Real Madrid in May after five years with the team. For a time this summer, Manchester United was considered the frontrunner to sign the Austrian. The former Bayern Munich player boasts an illustrious club career, having won 12 league titles and four Champions League trophies. Despite ongoing speculation regarding interest from various clubs as his contract with Real came to a close, Alaba has yet to sign with any team.
Sergio Ramos, 40 (Last club: Monterrey)
The iconic Spanish defender Ramos has been a free agent since December 2025 after leaving Monterrey in Mexico. At 40 years old, he has not declared his retirement, and some reports indicate he still believes he can compete at a high level. Earlier this year, he led a consortium that attempted to purchase a controlling stake in his former club Sevilla, but the bid was unsuccessful.
Who else is currently a free agent?
Jordan Ayew, 34 (Last club: Leicester City)
Dele Alli, 30 (Last club: Como)
Joselu, 36 (Last club: Al-Gharafa)
Anthony Martial, 30 (Last club: Monterrey)
Conor Coady, 33 (Last club: Wrexham)
Wilfried Zaha, 33 (Last club: Galatasaray)
James Rodriguez, 35 (Last club: Minnesota United)
Tyrell Malacia, 27 (Last club: Manchester United)
Oleksandr Zinchenko, 29 (Last club: Ajax)
Solly March, 32 (Last club: Brighton and Hove Albion)
Georginio Wijnaldum, 35 (Last club: Al-Ettifaq)
Yves Bissouma, 30 (Last club: Tottenham Hotspur)
