Significant news for Iraola: Liverpool has received a major injury boost ahead of a hectic September schedule.

As Liverpool gears up for a busy September, beginning with a match against Ipswich Town on Friday, the Reds have received encouraging news regarding Joe Gomez’s injury status.

With the summer transfer window now closed, Andoni Iraola must work with the current squad until at least January.

Liverpool is currently dealing with several long-term injuries, including those of Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni, and Hugo Ekitike, who have all been sidelined for an extended period.

Gomez has also been unavailable this season due to a muscle injury sustained during pre-season, but according to DaveOCKop, his situation is improving.

The 29-year-old is reportedly “progressing with his rehabilitation and is close to returning to full first-team training,” and there is even a “slim chance” he could be included in the squad for the away match against Ipswich on Friday night.

However, if that does not materialize, there is optimism that he will be fit for the Premier League clash against Fulham on September 12th.

Should Joe Gomez play as a right-back upon his return?

While it may be unexpected for Gomez to feature against Ipswich, his potential return is a significant advantage for Iraola, who is in need of additional defensive options.

Jeremie Frimpong’s difficulties at right-back have been widely noted, making it seem logical to replace him with Gomez once he regains full fitness.

Although right-back may not be Gomez’s primary position, he can offer physicality and stability, qualities that Frimpong has struggled to deliver this season.

Bradley is still viewed as Liverpool’s preferred right-back, provided he overcomes his injury issues, but for the time being, Gomez appears to be the more practical choice.

Without being overly critical of Frimpong, who is putting in effort but not meeting the required standard, it could also be argued that playing Ronald Araujo at right-back would be a more sensible option.

It is to be hoped that the Dutchman can quiet his detractors and start to excel, yet currently, he appears to be the least impressive acquisition from a lackluster summer transfer window in 2025.

Regarding Gomez, his ongoing injury issues will continue to be a hindrance, as they have been for much of his career, but his return is certainly positive news and will enhance Liverpool’s squad depth.
