Package confirmed: The Liverpool transfer target has been reported to be undergoing a medical as part of a $58 million move.
Teun Koopmeiners is on the verge of finalizing a permanent transfer to Juventus from Atalanta, with the deal valued at $58 million (£43.9 million).
This development was reported by renowned Italian transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly Twitter).
Liverpool had shown significant interest in the 26-year-old midfielder, but ultimately chose to pursue other options, notably their unsuccessful attempt to acquire Martin Zubimendi from La Real.
The agreement for Koopmeiners includes a fixed fee of €52 million along with €7 million in potential add-ons, and he has signed a five-year contract, having expressed a strong preference for a move to Juventus.
A medical examination is being arranged as part of the finalization process.
This summer, Koopmeiners faced criticism for his actions, particularly after he refused to train with Atalanta, which drew the ire of coach Gian Piero Gasperini, as he sought a transfer to Juventus.
His ability to play both defensively and in a more advanced midfield role would have provided Liverpool with valuable versatility.
Notably, his strength lies in his progressive ball-carrying skills, ranking in the 91st percentile according to FBref, along with his capacity to impact play in the attacking third.
However, Liverpool’s current squad is well-equipped with creative players such as Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, and Dominik Szoboszlai, making the need for additional creativity less pressing.
The priority instead lies in securing a reliable long-term option for the No.6 role, someone adept in possession and capable of contributing to build-up play.
Following the unsuccessful pursuit of Zubimendi, Ryan Gravenberch has stepped up and is performing admirably in these areas.
