Liverpool in ‘talks’ with ‘world-class’ winger’s representatives after Antoine Semenyo blow…

Liverpool is currently in discussions with the representatives of a ‘world-class’ German winger following the setback of Antoine Semenyo’s decision.

The club has quickly moved on from Semenyo’s choice to join Manchester City, as reports indicate that the reigning Premier League champions are now negotiating to secure a German international winger for a favorable price during the January transfer window.

Despite Liverpool’s interest in the Bournemouth and Ghana international winger, Manchester City has successfully acquired Semenyo. Sources have informed TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent, Graeme Bailey, that the opportunity to compete for significant trophies with Pep Guardiola’s team played a crucial role in Semenyo’s choice.

Although Liverpool is disappointed about not securing the winger they viewed as the ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah, the Merseyside club has already shifted focus and is in discussions to sign Karim Adeyemi.

As reported by Anfield Index, Liverpool has engaged in ‘preliminary talks’ with Adeyemi’s agents, with the Borussia Dortmund and Germany international winger available for a mere £20 million (€23 million, $27 million) in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Liverpool-focused news outlet shared on X at 10:03 am on December 2024: “Exclusive: Karim Adeyemi is among the candidates being evaluated for January.

“As the competition intensifies for Antoine Semenyo, Liverpool finds itself uncertain regarding the £65 million asking price.

“Preliminary discussions have taken place with Adeyemi’s representatives, and he could be obtainable for approximately £20 million.”

Adeyemi has been part of Dortmund since 2022 and is contracted with the German club until the summer of 2027.

The 23-year-old Germany international winger has netted 32 goals and provided 22 assists in 129 appearances for Dortmund throughout his career.

Dortmund’s head coach Niko Kovac is a strong admirer of Adeyemi and considers the winger to be “world class.”

In late November, Kovac commented on Adeyemi following the Champions League match against Villarreal, as reported by Get Football News Germany: “He was already making strides on the right flank during the first half.

“That’s what he’s capable of. We maintain a very strong relationship with him.

“I have high expectations of him because I recognize his immense potential. He demonstrated that once more in today’s match.

“He should, must, and is also able to replicate that in the forthcoming matches.

“I’m very pleased about it. The young man possesses genuine skills that are well-suited for any team competing at the Bundesliga level. He is truly a world-class player.”

Could Liverpool secure Karim Adeyemi for £20m in January?

While this marks the first instance of Liverpool reportedly engaging in discussions regarding Adeyemi, connections between the Premier League club and the winger initially surfaced last month.

In November, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung highlighted that ‘Liverpool and Real Madrid are the two foreign clubs that would particularly attract Adeyemi.’

This came after Sky Germany’s assertion that super-agent Jorge Mendes is ‘in discussions’ with clubs, including Manchester United, concerning a transfer for Adeyemi in 2026.

Nevertheless, it seems improbable that Liverpool will finalize a deal for Adeyemi for merely £20m (€23m, $27m).

On November 14, our transfer correspondent, Fraser Fletcher, indicated that Borussia Dortmund is seeking at least €70m (£62m / $81m) for Adeyemi.

At that time, we reported that Arsenal and Man Utd are interested in the winger, whose negotiations with Dortmund regarding a new contract have stalled.

It is difficult to imagine Dortmund significantly lowering their asking price to just £20m (€23m, $27m), particularly with Kovac’s team still aspiring to clinch the Bundesliga title and aiming to advance to the later stages of the Champions League.
