PGMOL expert: An Arsenal player may face a lengthy suspension following an ‘off-the-ball’ incident against Newcastle, which warrants investigation.

Mikel Arteta is confronted with the possibility of one of his Arsenal players receiving retrospective punishment for actions taken during the match against Newcastle United.

This information comes from Keith Hackett, a former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, who exclusively informed Football Insider that a disciplinary panel might become involved if Newcastle decides to report the incident in question.

In a dramatic match on Sunday, 28 September, Newcastle suffered a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal after initially taking the lead with a goal from Nick Woltemade, only for late strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes to turn the game around at St James’ Park.

Woltemade has adapted well to life at Newcastle, scoring twice in three Premier League matches since his transfer from VfB Stuttgart, but his goal in the 34th minute was insufficient to secure a win against the Gunners.

Gabriel Magalhaes should have received a red card during the match against Newcastle.

Immediately following the German international’s goal, after a confrontation with Arsenal’s Gabriel in the penalty area, the two players clashed again as Arteta’s team restarted play.

Gabriel struck Woltemade in the face, retaliating after their earlier dispute, yet the centre-back escaped punishment as referee Jarred Gillett did not witness the incident.

Ironically, it was the Brazilian defender who later scored the decisive goal, silencing St James’ Park and bringing the Gunners within two points of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings.

“I’m not the type of player who will fall down for this.”

Nick Woltemade shares his thoughts on the altercation with Gabriel.

Fans are understandably outraged by the decision and VAR’s failure to address the incident, which likely would have resulted in the centre-back receiving a red card and at least a three-match suspension.

Newcastle United may choose to report the Arsenal player to the football authorities.

Newcastle United may report the Arsenal player to the football authorities.

Having previously asserted that Gabriel should have been sent off at St James’ Park, Hackett indicated that the player could face retrospective consequences if the Magpies decide to report the incident.

“Absolutely. I believe the procedures are in place for that. A club can report the incident, and then the football association will inquire with the referee and his two assistants about it,” he stated exclusively to Football Insider.

“If they have witnessed it, that will halt any further action in the disciplinary process. They do not wish to re-officiate matches. If they have not seen it, they will reach out to the clubs for their comments.

“In that case, the player should be charged. In a situation where there is a violent act that was not seen by the match officials but is clearly visible in video replays, this should be looked into.

“Did anyone witness it? Did VAR observe it? If they did, that ends the matter. If they did not, and it’s an off-the-ball incident, it will be sent to a disciplinary panel for examination.”
