New details regarding Marc Guehi’s transfer have surfaced, shedding light on the Liverpool target’s frustration.

On deadline day, Marc Guehi was denied a late £35 million transfer to Liverpool.

Reports indicate that Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish did not meet with Marc Guehi and his representatives until 6 PM on transfer deadline day, as he was attending a fitness class at a gym in Soho. The Eagles’ captain had already completed a medical examination in anticipation of a £35 million move to Liverpool, but the deal fell apart at the last moment.

The failure of Palace to secure a suitable replacement, particularly after a loan deal for Brighton’s Igor Julio was halted on the final day of the transfer window, was cited as a significant factor in the breakdown of Guehi’s transfer. Head coach Oliver Glasner expressed his desire for the captain to remain, despite the fact that Guehi is now poised to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old is reportedly furious about the situation, having conducted himself with respect throughout the summer, especially when players like Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa effectively forced their way out for desired transfers.

After undergoing a medical at Liverpool’s London offices, with Palace’s permission, Guehi was under the impression that he would be joining Isak on Merseyside by the end of the day.

However, concerns emerged when it became clear that no replacement was arriving at Selhurst Park, and Parish met with Guehi and his advisors just one hour before the deadline.

The 60-year-old had been at a fitness class in Soho prior to discussing the situation with his team’s captain, as reported by the BBC.

A deal sheet was submitted for Guehi, which would have allowed Palace and Liverpool additional time to finalize the transfer after the deadline, but Parish ultimately had to inform the England international that he could not approve the sale that evening.

While Palace did manage to sign Toulouse centre-back Jaydee Canvot, it was believed that a more experienced player was necessary to accompany the 19-year-old.

Ousmane Diomande, Evan Ndicka, and Igor were all evaluated at various points during the transfer window, but none of these options came to fruition. Palace attempted to convince Liverpool to include Joe Gomez in a trade for Guehi, but the Reds declined.

Liverpool’s interest in Guehi has been ongoing for a year, and despite investing around £450m during the summer, they may still feel slightly underwhelmed in the centre-back position with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Gomez, and the young Giovanni Leoni leading the defense for Arne Slot.

Guehi had recorded a farewell video for Palace and is now reportedly contemplating whether to continue in his role as captain.

He is still expected to secure a transfer, either in January or at the end of the season as a free agent. However, many will find the defender’s frustrations to be quite reasonable.
