BREAKING :Liverpool ‘agree personal terms’ to sign PL star as ‘deal could be done soon’…
Romano: Liverpool ‘have reached an agreement on personal terms’ to acquire Premier League star as ‘the deal may be finalized shortly’
Fabrizio Romano: Liverpool ‘have reached an agreement on personal terms’ with Marc Guehi, with a £35m deal potentially being completed ‘soon’
Liverpool is aiming to expedite their transfer activities ahead of Friday’s match against Bournemouth.
Reports from Fabrizio Romano indicate that Liverpool has secured personal terms with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
Guehi faced the Reds at Wembley on Sunday, where the Eagles triumphed over Liverpool in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time.
The defender has been a target for a move to Anfield for a while, as he approaches the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park. He has garnered interest from Newcastle United this transfer window, following four rejected bids for the England international last summer.
Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur showed interest in him back in January, with reports suggesting that the North London club made a late attempt to acquire the defender by offering £70m.
Liverpool hastens Marc Guehi’s transfer
Guehi transferred to Palace from Chelsea in 2021 and has risen to prominence with the Eagles, becoming a full and regular England international while also aiding the Selhurst Park team in securing their first major trophy with the FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May.
In a significant update regarding Liverpool’s pursuit of the player, Fabrizio Romano stated on Wednesday afternoon: “Liverpool have reached an agreement on personal terms with Marc Guehi! Giovanni Leoni is also interested in the transfer.
“Negotiations are ongoing with Palace for a fee around £35m as the total package, and the deal could be finalized soon.”
This news comes just days before Liverpool’s Premier League opener at home against Bournemouth on Friday. In his update, Romano noted that the pursuit of Guehi has not affected the Reds’ interest in Leoni, as the club is actively working on both transfers.
According to BBC Sport: “The Italy Under-19 international is not viewed as a potential competitor for Guehi but rather as a complementary addition for the squad.
Concerns arise regarding Liverpool’s defensive depth as the club seeks solutions.
Guehi is not inclined to renew his contract with Palace, which explains the relatively low transfer fee of £35m being discussed.
Leoni, a promising young defender, could help secure the club’s future defensive options. Ibrahima Konate is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield, with no extension agreement currently in sight.
Moreover, captain Virgil van Dijk has two years remaining on his contract and will be nearly 36 when it concludes. Guehi still has his prime years ahead, as Arne Slot aims to strengthen Liverpool’s defense.
Reflecting on the goals conceded against Palace at Wembley, Slot remarked: “Last season, we enjoyed significant ball possession, but it didn’t always translate into promising opportunities. Currently, we are more effective in creating and capitalizing on promising situations than we were throughout the entirety of last season.
“However, the flip side is that we have conceded four goals against Milan, one against the Japanese team [Yokohama F. Marinos], two against [Athletic Club] Bilbao, and another two today.
Our strength last season lay in winning most matches by a single goal, primarily due to our ability to maintain clean sheets or limit ourselves to conceding just one goal.
Today, we managed to score twice against Palace, which was something we failed to achieve last season – we only managed a 1-0 victory and a 1-1 draw at Anfield. That’s a positive.
“Nonetheless, conceding two goals against a strong team that posed challenges for everyone last season, and I anticipate they will do so again this season.
A lot of balls were played into our defensive line, and numerous crosses were delivered. I felt we didn’t concede many chances until they scored the equalizer at 2-2, after which they became more threatening.”
