Virgil van Dijk is on the verge of learning the FA’s punishment related to the Gordon incident, as previously unreleased footage has been revealed…
Virgil van Dijk receives FA verdict regarding Gordon incident as new footage surfaces.
Virgil van Dijk awaits the outcome of the FA’s disciplinary action regarding the incident involving Gordon, following the release of previously unseen footage.
Liverpool’s captain, Virgil van Dijk, was involved in a controversial moment with Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon during their 3-3 draw on Wednesday.
The Football Association has confirmed that Van Dijk will not face any disciplinary action for his role in the incident with Newcastle United’s Gordon.
The clash occurred off the ball in the first half while Newcastle was ahead 1-0, during a match that ultimately ended in a draw at St James’ Park.
Recently released footage appears to show Van Dijk making contact with Gordon using his shoulder, with the ball not in play at that moment.
Commentator Clive Tyldesley noted that VAR reviewed the incident for a possible red card. However, officials at Stockley Park concluded that it did not warrant a red card for violent conduct.
Replays indicated that Van Dijk was fortunate to avoid a sending-off, both from referee Andy Madley on the field and the VAR team.
Newcastle supporters may be dissatisfied with the decision that the 33-year-old cannot be retrospectively punished.
The Premier League clarified its stance on red card incidents at the beginning of the 2024-25 season, stating that only events “not seen by match officials or VAR can be subject to the FA’s retrospective disciplinary process.”
Since VAR reviewed Van Dijk’s alleged foul, he will not face any further consequences from the FA.
This is not the first time Van Dijk has faced scrutiny at St James’ Park; in August 2023, he received a red card for a professional foul on Alexander Isak, resulting in a one-match suspension and a £100,000 fine for comments directed at officials.
Former Premier League players Roy Keane and Ian Wright, during a ‘Stick to Football’ podcast watchalong, expressed that Van Dijk was fortunate to escape a red card.
Wright remarked, “He is fully aware of his actions. That’s a pen.” Manchester United legend Keane concurred, stating, “That’s a penalty.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his frustration with the officials regarding three key incidents during the match, particularly the failure to issue a red card to Van Dijk.
“I believe VAR reviewed the incident involving Van Dijk and Gordon and determined that nothing significant occurred, so we must accept that decision. I was initially taken aback by it,” Howe commented.
Newcastle also voiced their discontent over a situation involving Jarell Quansah and Alexander Isak in the penalty area, where Quansah seemed to trip Isak.
“I felt it was a penalty for Alex, but I haven’t had the chance to see a replay; that was just my first impression,” he noted.
Newcastle made history by being the first team to end Liverpool’s seven-match winning streak in all competitions, thanks to Gordon’s late equalizer.
Despite Mohamed Salah scoring twice and putting Liverpool in a strong position after recovering from a goal down on two occasions, it was Gordon who ultimately celebrated after his encounter with Van Dijk.
