Update: Liverpool poised to outmaneuver Manchester United in pursuit of “excellent” £42m defender – report
Liverpool appears set to surpass Manchester United in acquiring a new left-back, as their Premier League rivals have yet to initiate any action, according to recent reports.
Reds exploring options to succeed Andy Robertson.
Sky Sports analyst Jamie Carragher has advocated for the replacement of Andy Robertson during the January transfer window, stating: “I believe they require a left-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance was subpar.
He is capable of much better, and Conor Bradley is exceptional.
“Andy Robertson, a true legend, seems to be struggling in every match. I don’t think Kostas Tsimikas meets the necessary standard to step in for him.
“If Liverpool can secure a left-back in January, it would significantly strengthen their position in the league title race.”
The Scotland international has not been at his best this season, prompting the Reds to seek alternatives, including discussions to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague, potentially for a €25m (£21m) fee.
Arne Slot’s team has also been monitoring Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu since September, with the Italian club recognizing the challenge of retaining the 20-year-old beyond this season.
Dorgu is generating considerable interest from the Premier League, with Manchester United among the key contenders for his signature.
However, Caught Offside reports that Liverpool remains in a strong position to finalize a deal.
The Reds are closely monitoring the young talent, and United’s lack of movement has created opportunities for other interested parties.
Lecce has set a valuation of approximately €50m (£42m) for the promising player, and there is expected to be significant interest this month, with Chelsea, Manchester City, and several other European clubs also keen.
Dorgu demonstrating significant potential.
The Danish prospect recently received an accolade for his performances in 2024 and has garnered praise from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
It is not surprising that the Lecce player received this accolade, especially after scoring his inaugural international goal in a 2-0 victory over Switzerland last September, along with delivering several remarkable performances at the club level.
The Denmark international has become an integral part of Lecce, having made 55 appearances for the team and demonstrating his adaptability by playing on both flanks.
In the past year, the Copenhagen-born talent has ranked in the 97th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes among full-backs, and he also stands in the 94th percentile for aerial duels won.
Consequently, Dorgu could serve as a reliable long-term successor to Robertson, making it promising news that Liverpool may outmaneuver Manchester United to secure his transfer.
