Sunderland’s injury concerns ease significantly before their visit to Middlesbrough…
Sunderland have been given a significant injury boost as winger Patrick Roberts is expected to make a comeback and join the squad for their upcoming match against Middlesbrough this weekend.
This news will surely provide a much-needed boost to the team ahead of their clash with Roberts’ former club.
Roberts, who suffered a calf injury during the 1-1 draw against Rotherham last month, has been absent from the team. However, he has now returned to full training and is expected to be included in the squad for the upcoming trip to the Riverside, barring any unforeseen incidents.
Additionally, the team can count on the availability of new signings Romaine Mundle and Leo Hjelde. In fact, Hjelde has a good chance of starting in the upcoming match.
“Patrick Roberts will be part of the team as long as he successfully completes Saturday’s training session, which indicates that he is recovering faster than anticipated,” stated head coach Michael Beale on Friday.
It is crucial that we acknowledge and respect this fact. However, if you were to inquire with Paddy, he is fully fit and prepared to participate. Both Leo and Romaine are also prepared to join the team.
“Leo has slightly more playing minutes this season compared to Romaine, but rest assured, they are both fully prepared to be included in the squad for the upcoming weekend.”
Unfortunately, Callum Styles will not be able to make his debut for Sunderland against Middlesbrough. As the team’s third and final addition in January, the midfielder recently underwent surgery to have his appendix removed. Therefore, he will need a couple more weeks to recover before he can play.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman explained that there was an agreement regarding Callum, but unfortunately, he had to undergo surgery. Speakman mentioned that the surgery was a relatively minor procedure, thanks to the exceptional work of the medical staff.
He further stated that Callum just needs to recover and get back on his feet, and he is expected to return to the field within the next ten to fourteen days. Once he is fully fit, he will be available for selection.
Speakman acknowledged that the decision to prioritize Callum’s long-term availability was a crucial one. They had to decide whether to stick with him or opt for someone else for the upcoming games. Ultimately, they believed it was the right choice to forgo the next game or two in order to have him fully fit for the remainder of the season.
